This thread is for Dyxum members to report the serial numbers of any lost or stolen kit for others to look out for.
If you lose any equipment, please post the details in this thread and we will endevour to keep this first post updated with a summary.
Please avoid any comment or expressions of sympathy in this thread - the idea is to make it as easy as possible for members to identify if equipment they are offered may have been stolen at some time.

This is to prevent buyers from acquiring stolen gear. It may show up on ebay, or audaciously even on Dyxum, or on other auction or private-sale sites.

This gear was stolen in Rome, Italy, on May 15, 2010:

A700, S/N 0502963. VG to EX condition. RRS L-plate, Giottos LCD protector and Sony shoulder strap were attached. 8GB CF was inserted.

Sony G 1.4/35, S/N 0205983. Mint condition, with hood. Lens was mounted on a700.

(edited to delete rear cap)

Stolen 02 Feb 2010 Rucksack stolen containing amongst other stuff:

KM 5D - Ser. No. 00508546
MF Adapter
Schneider Kreuzenach Xenar 50mm f2.8.

It was in an old pale blue Jessops holster bag.

This occurred in the area of Victoria station in SW London.

Funny you started this, my experience started me thinking of starting a website that dealers could subscribe to that listed users submitted stolen gear info (together with crime number to stop spoofs).

NOTE ADDED: If you find that you have the camera/lens, don't be shy as I was covered by my insurance claim, it would be just nice to know that that my old cam was in good hands again. Of course if you want to sell it back to me then that's fine too.

Cheers

Sandy

I never thought I'll be adding to this list but here we go...

Stolen on 6th of July 2013
Olbia, Sardinia, Italy

Sony A77 (SLT-A77V) Serial: S01-0690968-O
Sony 16-105mm (SAL-16105) Serial: S01-1838781-M

Both were taken, along with a whole bunch of other things (clothes, computer, Fuji Finepix XP20, food...), by breaking into a car at a car park close to city center and ferry terminal. Took me quite a while to find the serial numbers...

Thanks in advance for letting me know if you spot them anywhere...

FOUND FOUND FOUND!!!

Have had all my gear returned to me after the police arrested someone in possession as he tried to sell it at a pawn shop (CEX). They got slightly suspicious and told him to go and get his passport for i.d. whilst they tested the equipment. Police were waiting for him when he got back!

I had spent all morning going to different pawn shops handing out equipment info and serial numbers and this seems to have paid off.

I was not hopeful in the slightest that any of my gear would be returned, so I am surprised, relived and drained from the experience.

Well that's a great resource. I was going to offer my solution, I have a spreadsheet in my Google Drive folder with all my major camera gear with serial numbers, when purchased and who from.
I can access this anywhere in the world that I can sign into Google.
But I will register my gear here also!

I couldn't believe it when I read your first post. I thought how distraught I'd have felt had it been me.

I'm even more stunned to hear you've got it back. You have no idea how pleased I am for you.

It's obvious he had no idea what he had. Any half decent pawn or 2nd hand shop would have done the same, or at least you'd hope so. I roughly guesstimated the value to be around 9000 quid and you can almost guarantee the idiot who took it in had the typical drug user appearance. I bet they knew before he got to the counter it would be dodgy. The person who called the police has got to be on your Christmas card list now.

I just hope the thieving scum doesn't get a fine, community service or even worse an official police caution. That seems to be the case all too often now. With any luck they'll make him pay for the damage to your car too and compensate you for your anguish and distress. They should chop his hands off.

I appreciate your comments.

Believe me, I am extremely surprised I have it back - 4 years of hard work building up my gear gone in seconds.

I am going to the pawn shop tomorrow to express my thanks and will be writing to the police to thank them for their speed in getting the gear back to me (I have a wedding of a friend on Saturday!

The first thing I did when I found it had been stolen was ring the police, the second thing was to ring all the pawn shops to advise of the gear - I emailed head offices who distributed the info for me so I am grateful to their vigilance, yet it required effort.

He has admitted handling the goods (about £7500 I reckoned) and has a court appearance already set.

Excellent news. Do tell us when and where as I'm sure there are more than a few of us who would make the effort to meet the scroat when he steps out onto a public space. We could shoot him a few times - with our cameras of course. (I'd bring my Purdey rangefinder!)

I'm sure at some point someone (usually I) should beckon in about having good camera equipment insurance? I know the "good ones" act immediately, so for anyone who relies on their kit, make sure you have a good policy!

I'll quietly step away now and let you all enjoy...

Those of you in the UK may want to use this website:

https://www.immobilise.com/index.php - Immobilise

to register your cameras and lenses.

It's free and in use by the Police when they recover stolen gear.

I missed the good news in August, but it is good news not just for Stu, but for everyone in the Stockport area: there are only ever a few active burglars at any one time, but they do disproportionate mischief. So Stu's notations of his serial numbers and police report allowed the police to do their job and for his neighbors to sleep well.

Rule number One -- keep the serial numbers of all your lenses ON PAPER somewhere. There's no point in storing them on a desktop or laptop if that is stolen too.

Personally, I'm not keen on providing serial numbers or descriptions or values to a third party in advance of the theft. Putting insurance on items simply gives a part-time employee of the insurance broker a list of items to steal. Giving that information to any third-party by email means that a hacker, bored with stealing credit card numbers, will go for the soft target of the third-party registration company.

Rule number Two -- keep the secret of your valuables to yourself until you need to publish it.

If Sony ever develops quasi-professional support, it will establish a theft reporting system for Alpha bodies and lenses, that it can use to circulate all its dealers.     The police can handle pawn shops because there are laws requiring reporting in most Western countries, but there are no criteria for dealers in second hand goods.   On similar lines, Ebay and Amazon must require serial numbers as part of a lens listing, or deny the posting.   Absent that, they just become dealers in stolen goods.

Finally, with wifi cameras, wouldn't it be good for Sony to insert, in ROM, a responder that will bleep in GPS in response to a "show yourself code" when the body has been reported stolen?   That, more than almost anything else, would be a killer app. I think it would enhance customer loyalty in the long run. But in the short run it would inhibit Sony sales of replacement cameras, so one wonders if it will ever happen.

I suppose an update is in order!

Thief went to preliminary hearing where he pleaded guilty to handling stolen goods.

It was his first criminal record (first time criminal or first time caught?) and was given a 24 month conditional order (a little stronger than a slap on the wrist), whereby, if he commits another crime within the 2 year period, he will be retried for the theft of my gear, and sentenced on that basis.

My first concern in all of this was getting my gear back, which I did. I am pleased he has been caught and convicted, and can only hope that his stupidity and experience will deter him from offending again (there's always hope!)

What have I learned from this...

1)don't trust your insurer to pay out unless you get dedicated insurance for your gear. I am with eversure who insure 'amateurs' (anyone who earns less than 50% of their income from photography, which is the boat I am currently in) - £8000 of cover, home, car, and on the body insurance, including accidental damage, all for £165 which I believe is fantastic and well worth the price (in comparison to other dedicated insurers, it's cheap as well!)

2)assume someone is always watching you when you put your gear somewhere

3)keep record of serial numbers (and keep them up to date!!), protect with UV paint, and be proactive if the worst happens

4) don't have all your gear in one bag - better to have half of it nicked, rather than the whole lot!

its called crimestoppers uv property protector - each bottle has a specific chemical makeup, meaning if your equipment is recovered and the police find the uv mark, they can run it through a system which will tell them who it belongs to (As long as you've registered on the immobilise website, as mentioned in a previous post)

There's something similar over here called Data Dots, I see them on cars all the time but have never thought about using them on my gear, which I am now reconsidering.

Disgustingly low sentence. Bascially there is absolutely no consequence or penalty to him at all as long as he behalves like the rest of us - a civilised human being! - for the next 2 years.

They should have made him walk about the town for a month with an 'I am a convicted thief' sandwich board and put his photos in all the local papers and on his notice board at work (if he was in work)

Sorry..late to this thread but that ridiculous slap on the wrist has really p**sed me off!

Hello Moderator team,

once in a while there are posts about stolen photography gear. Now I was wondering if it wouldn't be an extremely useful feature (to add) which would:

1) allow victims to launch relevant data of stolen equipment in a Dyxum data base;

and

2) allow all other users to check in this data base whether serial numbers of equipment to be bought (used) from any source doesn't figure in the stolen equipment listing.

Just a thought. OTOH it may extrapolate what the site is intended for or even cause legal problems, for example, if by error (or intentionally) wrong information is launched.

Here is a long list of stolen lenses and other stuff (mostly Canon/Nikon, but also some Sony) from LensProToGo:

Although my friends are all sure that I am involved, I wasn't in MA for the past 1.5 years and I have nothing to do with it...

The following items were stolen from our rental car on the 26/7/16 at Brianza Nord Service Area on the A4 between Bergamo and Milan in Italy:

Sony A6000 - 3883882
Sony FE 70-200 F4 G OSS - 1851972
Sigma 30/1.4 DC DN - 51581924
Sigma 19/2.8 - 13263434
Samyang 8/2.8 - 809298882808

That will teach me to place all my eggs in one basket (Fiat Panda Boot)!!!
A thoroughly depressing experience. All the items were reported to the police in Verbania, Italy.

My almost new Sony A7RII camera + lens were swiftly removed from my tote whilst refueling on the A1 at Anagni, somewhat near Rome on 9 September 2016 in the early afternoon. We think the Esso station attendant was involved. Help me catch him, please.

Sony A7R II serial number: 3391945
Sony FE 55mm F1.8 ZA lens, haven't found the serial number yet.

They also took our Surface Pro 4, which is almost funny, since it has optical recognition and unless can be dismantled, is pretty much a brick.

Theft reported in Bernalda, IT.

So much for a fun vacation...thanks, Italy.

All,

For the UK members (I guess) and, especially, those in the South East/Kent specifically.

We have just had our house broken into and, amongst the items 'removed' were the following (serial numbers I have to find and I will update this as and when I locate them):

a99 V SLT body; no damage nor scuffs etc. to differentiate it
Sigma 24-70/2.8 HSM EX DG - again, clean and exceptional condition
Minolta 100-200/3.5 zoom; clean and tidy with no scuffs but no front cap.
3 x Sony batteries for the above
Sony Messenger bag - dark grey with silver grey interior

One discerning aspect of the a99; it comes with a Optech Dyxum printed strap; I know of only a handful of these in the UK and Europe so, if seen on an a99 for sale anywhere - it's mine!!

Clearly, these could be offered as a 'job lot': they were ready gift wrapped for the individual who took them as I was intending to use them in London the following day.

Any news or information will be gratefully received and passed on to the authorities. Hopefully we might find the erst of the items taken as well...

Thanks and best regards,

Neil.

The strap may well be a good identifier. Will keep a lookout in UK and check the auctions that I go to, from now on. Meanwhile...keep your chin up

Thanks to http://friedmanarchives.blogspot.com.au/2016/11/another-benefit-of-high-megapixel.html - Gary Friedman in his Blog we now know that http://www.picmeta.com/products/picture-information-extractor.htm - Picture Information Extractor is able to extract a Serial Number for the A7R 11 from the EXIF in your photos. This might be useful to use in http://www.stolencamerafinder.com/ - Stolen Camera Finder . Good Luck!
