Hello guys,

So, I've recently been a bit ****ed at how difficult it is to (properly) post a photo from Flickr to Dyxum and decided to make a Web-App to take care of that, you just enter your username (the one in you URL). For example, my flickr page is http://flickr.com/photos/argote/ so I'd enter argote into the box and click on the button. The codes to post any (or all) of your last 20 images will come up along with a thumbnail of the photo and you just copy it and paste it into Dyxum (or any other IPB forum).

So here's a couple of screenshots:

And here's the link:

Argote's Flickr poster for IPB forums BETA

http://flickr.argote.mx/ - http://flickr.argote.mx/

Secondary:

http://luisargote.com/flickr.php - http://luisargote.com/flickr.php

Feel free to make any suggestions, keep in mind that this is still in BETA so things might go awry.

I have tested this on Opera 11.01 and Firefox 3.6.6 where it works perfectly, I've also tested it on Internet Explorer 8 where the font color for the legend is wrong and in Chrome 5.0.375.99 where the text makes one of the elements overflow its area (it still works though, I'll look into this soon).

I have several future improvements in mind in no particular order (that I'll go about making sometime in the future)

- Put the codes in a TextArea and have it be autoselected (and maybe copied) on click (this currently doesn't work because I'd need to get rid of the HTML on the description)

- Make the page NOT break if some kinds of HTML are included in the description or title

- Make the page more aesthetically pleasing - Halfway done...

- Enable selection of what data to include - DONE!

- Enable selection of what photo size to post - DONE!

- Enable you to select photos other than your 20 latest on the photostream - DONE!

- Integrate with location information (possibly with google maps) to add a small image of the photo location to the post - Halfway done... does not currently work with Dyxum

Feel free to share any thoughts.

If you accidentally pressed the button before inputing your name and are having problems with the loading, then refresh the page.

Also, if you want to load another user, refresh before doing so (I'll work on this too).

Basically, try using refresh if you run into any problems.

I also find the title a bit 'shouty'... I like the automatic adding in of exif data, although I think I'd drop the Camera make, mode and 35mm equvalent bits as well and possibly add in ISO speed.

Dear moderators, I believe this VERY helpful thread should become a "sticky" in the forums?
(Not a Flickr user myself so I can't judge)

-edit- if the next poster agrees, please use the "post options" on my post to "Report Post" this one to get moderator attention?
I can't do this myself on my own posts.

How, or does, the app decide which image size to use?

EDIT: found that it selects the Large image size, I upload 900x600px images as the originals so the Large size is no bigger/the same as that which works well for me.
Nice work argote, I've bookmarked the page and will start using it.

I like it! With a little editing I changed the font size and description, added the lens info and deleted a couple of items (camera make and 35mm equivalent)

um, hold on. That's not a 900x600 image, here's the large image done the old way.

I can see what's different, just need to replace the 'z' in the image script with a 'b' for Large or 'o' for the Original.

Hey guys, I've made some updates to the App, here's the changelog:

- There are now settings to select which EXIF data you want to post
- Unavailable data is no longer shown (if, for example, the lens info is not present on the EXIF then the Lens label will not be shown)
- You can now select from 4 image sizes
- You can now select the title size and the default title size is now 4
- Slight changes for smoother animations

Thanks for the feedback, be sure to let me know of any issues

This is excellent, Luis, and is especially welcome now that Flickr are rolling out a new design which makes it harder to grab the URL. Your app gave me options of 240, 500, 640 and 1024. My photo was 800px on the largest size, choosing 1024 gave me the original size. So I assume 1024 actually means "up to 1024". Firefox 3.6.6 and Vista 32 bit.

Nice work Louis! I found the same thing as AlanFromBangor with firefox 3.6.6 and XP Media Centre SP3.

I upload resized pictures (800px longest edge) to flickr but the 1024 option on your webtool gave the full 800px anyway. I've got the hang of it but if you had time to include an option for 'original size' it might make it a little bit more obvious.

Thanks for making the utility!

Still great a job!

Thanks!

As for the "bug", if you're talking about the image unavailable thing when you replace the image, I think that is not a bug but expected behavior, it is to prevent someone else from linking to your image and you suddenly changing it to something that could be less tasteful or appropriate.

It has been a 'feature' of the forum software for some time that stickies only stay in place if either the first post in the topic is from a moderator/admin or if the OP doesn't post in.

To get around the problem I've copied in a post of mine to the head of this topic, which should allow Argote to post in here and keep the sticky in place...

The feature that I would like would be a translator from flickr's html code for inserting an image into the equivalent dyxum forum code, since flickr has a feature that allows you to grab the html.

Ie, something that allows you to input <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/34353273@N00/4762781182/" title="DSC02528 (Large) by chris_hotwire, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4134/4762781182_207dc10cb1.jpg" width="500" height="333" alt="DSC02528 (Large)" /></a> (this code copied straight from flickr)

And get as an output the right code to paste into dyxum to allow this:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/34353273@N00/4762781182/">

instead of having to manually edit the code to suit dyxum's requirements, which when posting multiple images can get very tedious.

Select the old medium image size and deselect all of the options? Or do you not want the photo title and description?

Whenever I post an image, I like to have it with a link when you click the image. On the flickr page for an image, do you see a button that says "Share this"? If you click on that, then on "Grab the HTML", it gives the code to insert into a webpage, or any forum that accepts HTML. I can pick the size I want, etc.

Unfortunately, dyxum's forum code does not permit html.

Your mechanism is an improvement, but does only allows to go 20 images back. It's all variations on the same end goal.

If I may ask, why not use the grab link instead of the grab HTML in Flickr? The grab link does not require any tedious editing.

Ah yes, I'm well aware that Flickr lets you do that, I'm working on getting more than the lastest 20 images (I can currently get the latest 100 images but the Flickr API Agreement states that you should only query for a maximum of 20 images at a time).
I'm planning on adding sets and collections too but that will take time.

I wrote a small python program to do this, complete with a GUI, in just 99 lines of code. It requires PyGTK for the GUI. Get it http://derfian.hamsterkollektivet.se/html2bbcode - here .

Your Flickr photo stream URL is:

So you need to be entering 35940636@N06 not bigjt141

Select the code for the image you want as if you were selecting text in a word-processor. Copy it by right clicking and selecting copy then paste it into a dyxum post again with right click and paste.

I recall you were saying that Flicker does not like quires that return a lot of results. But some times I would like to retrieve something more than my "last 20".

Is it possible to add an offset number?

E.g I want pictures # 100 - 120 (in history) so to get this the offset " 100 " could be entered?

Just wondering?

^ That is one of the main features I wanted to add, however I was thinking of doing it with a next button and page numbers similar to Flickr or maybe infinite scrolling, not sure yet.
What would people around here prefer?

Argote: I would like to see a combination next button and page numbers. Infinite scrolling may take a long time to retrieve all the photo info.

Also, I noticed that once a query is done, you cannot go back and revise the size, for example. You have to start form scratch. Perhaps a Return button that takes you back to the starting page would be nice.

Finally, thank you again for the wonderful app.

Update: There is now a "More" button at the end that will allow you to get the next 20 photos from your stream until the end, this basically means that you can now get the codes for ALL your public photos which was the #1 requested feature.

Notes: This was a bit more complicated than I thought because I had made some incorrect design decisions when I started due to my unfamiliarity with jQuery and AJAX-Event callback handling, it has been sorted out now though.

Let me know what else you would like to see in my App and I'll consider it. Thanks for using it! I know Flickr shows BB Code now, but it still doesn't post the EXIF and other data that I consider is useful to share when posting a photo.

Hello Ken, I'm looking into your case, there is something definitely wrong but I haven't isolated what it is. Stay tuned and thanks for the report.

Hi Argote!

This link seems to be down as well. Tried uploading stuff tonight,
but the site won't open. FYI.

Hello Kennyf,

I just tried to open the site and it seems to be loading correctly for me.

Also, luisargote.com has been trasnfered succesfully so both links should be functional now.

Hi Kennyf, seems to be working fine for me. Hope it's working for you now, and thanks for posting - I had no idea this thread existed. That web app is brilliant, that should save me some time in the future.

Hello Ken, I've run it with you user and there seems to be some problem which I've been, thus far, unable to isolate. I've been quite busy with the holidays and then with work, but I'll look into it tonight.

No biggie - I understand about time and I am able to post the other way from flickr as it is and am quite satisfied in doing it that way. Just thought I'd add a note - thanks for your work though and your valuable addition to Dyxum and flickr.

Ken, I've isolated and fixed your problem, it seems it was derived from the fact that you choose to hide EXIF info and I was handling that case incorrectly in my design (I considered the fact that the information could be missing, but not that it could be hidden, it shows up differently for that case).

Unfortunately, when the App is unable to extract the EXIF information its functionality is somewhat reduced, you can however get the description, dates and locations (if available). I will be adding authentication support in the future (which would enable you to hide the EXIF information and still get full funcionality) but that is a major undertaking so it might take a while.

I'll be uploading the changes, as well as including some new features, soon (maybe tomorrow night).

I am really impressed with this, it's very hand here at work on my lunch break as the office IT policy blocks access to flickr so i can't post any photo links etc.

This webapp gets around this, (somehow) and enables me to link to photos i have already taken.

Thanks!

Pete

ps, it's the http://flickr.argote.mx/ - http://flickr.argote.mx/ one, the other i think is blocked through the firewall.

Thanks.

I have updated the app, you can now order the output by dragging and dropping the different rows in the selection panel.

I'll be working on enabling a preview screen and filtering by sets next. Let me know if you have any feedback or suggestions.

It looks like Mr Egg is shopping at the Trafford Center.

I like the photo, some nice colours going on there.
