OK, I'll start.

Small Blue cupido minimus. Britain's smallest butterfly. Unfortunately, the weather was too grey for them to be flying today:

And a fun one from yesterday: a Small Heath skulking in the grass:

If the subjects are cooperative enough to let me get close, I'm really liking the different perspective I get from my Sigma 24mm, which cost me next to nothing on ebay a few years ago. It's surprisingly sharp, and very good for close-focus:

#1 Marbled White @ 24mm f/5.6

#2 The same butterfly at @ 180mm

Not a great shot but this guy landed on the window on my patio while I was out shooting birds and I liked the way the sun was shining through his wings and his shadow.

Very nice dca1213. A pity you cut off the shadow of the antennae, but it's different from the usual butterfly images here.

Rusty, yours looks like a male small skipper to me.

Today has been one of the highlights of my already great butterflying year. Ladies and gentlemen, please rise for his majesty, the Purple Emperor. These beautiful insects spend most of their time in the tops of oak trees, but occasionally come down to take minerals from damp soil or animal droppings (which doesn't make for such great photographic backdrops!). The purple colour is irridescent, so you can only see it when the light hits at certain angles.

#1 Open wings, but no purple yet

#2 Mmm, horse poo!

The Essex Skipper is very similar to the Small Skipper, and you have to look at the antennae to tell the difference. I rather liked this shot which shows the distinguishing feature of the Essex Skipper quite nicely!

Thanks for the comment dilettante! I got the name from the translation of the english version of Wikipedia from the Dutch. I use this method often when I don't know the english name of a flower, fungus or butterfly by first looking it up in the Dutch Wikipedia and then switch to the english version.
Bur I must confess that sometimes (like now probably) this does not work correctly

If my Google skills are working
Dark Green Fritillary = argynnis aglaja = Grote parelmoervlinder
Queen of Spain = Issoria Lathonia = Kleine parelmoervlinder

Very nice picture! It's either a Dark Green Fritillary Argynnis aglaja, Niobe Fritillary [Argynnis niobe or High Brown Fritillary Argynnis adippe. They look very similar from the top, but I have a feeling this is a High Brown . (I'm not an expert though: I'd never seen a High Brown before three weeks ago, and was convinced that was Dark Green until a real expert corrected me! And we don't get Niobe's in the UK)

@digiton:

Beautiful images. The a700/100mm macro is a great combo, IMHO. Thanks for sharing these.

Both are great digiton, but #1 would be my "print it large" choice with its graceful symmetry.

The other posters on this page have graced this site with their work.

A visit to butterfly world with my 3 and 5 year olds yeilded some decent non macro results, first time shooting them. I quickly swappped my 35mm dt sam for a newly acquired Helios 44m 3 due to AF being fairly pants for shooting butterflies.... not near some of the previous standards but I`m learning.

@Scott3249: Was that picture taken this year in the UK? Flickr says it was taken March 6th which is very early for an Orange Tip - I'm envious!

Where was it?

It was taken in Georgia here in the US. We didn't have much of a winter at all so the bugs are going be the size of B-52's this year.
