A coot or two and the mandatory mallards. All w/a77 & 70400G wide open at 400mm, handheld and kneeling. Coot shots cropped 50% (they keep their distance if they see you) and the mallards just cropped for composition (they could care less how close you are)

Great photo's Brandy, I read Frankman's case study on birding yesterday afternoon during a quiet spell at work and then headed down to a local lake to try out some of his ideas. I was quite impressed with the results though I feel the shots were a little noisy and next time will try dropping the ISO down next time. Here's a couple of the shots:

Hi all

Up early yesterday morning and watched the sun come up over a lake walk near me. Intended getting some wildfowl pics in the early morning sun when this little chap came to visit.

Took a series of pics and here are 8 I would like to share with you all.

Hope you like them - it was freeeeeeezing this morning minus something!!

Graham

ps - all pics are with A77 and 70-400G and all were same settings:

pps - have also posted these in the "open forum" but have just discovered this section for bird pics so here are my first offerings in this section. Now I know there is this section for birds will be a regular visitor as this is what I enjoy most.

Some of the photographs I have seen are wonderful in this section - looking forward to being a regular viewer and hopefully contributor.

What a great section and superb forum/site this is.

And when my little robin Red Breast friend wasn't visiting, through the undergrowth popped up little Jenny Wren.

Again - camera, lens and settings all the same.

And still it was very, very cold!!!

Hope you like these two:

These two are both cropped, unlike the robin who is completely natural and full size.

By the way I did get some birds on the lake too!

Hey, I have a pair of Carolinas in my back garden. They don't look quite as good as these though as sadly the chickens in with them tend to walk on them. Poor little things. They are as happy as pie though.

Thanks for the nice comments.

Hols53, the settings were iso 800, f18, 1/1250 at 180mm. Below is a better shot of the American Robin. They don't even look related to yours, huh?

Russellsbags, the bird in #2 is a Black Crowned Night Heron, pretty much year round residents here. The bird in #3 is a White Crowned Sparrow.

Hi James

To get that silhouette effect did you under or over expose the photograph?

Lovely effect.

Prefer your second image of Mr Redbreast - lovely pic.

My pics I posted of Jenny Wren where sooooo much more difficult to get than the robin I posted - the challenge is getting the best pic for particular species I guess.

Thanks for that

From my chilly day at the lake here are three pictures of birds "doing things".

Blue tit flitting and coots racing - hope you like.

Graham

1 Blue tit flitting from tree to tree

Sony A77 + 70-400G
Shutter speed 1/4000 Aperture F5.6
Focal length 400mm ISO 640

When photograph was taken the sun appeared through a cold haze. The sky suddenly became blue through the cold air. Photograph cropped about 50%

2 Coots racing

Sony A77 + 70-400G
Shutter speed 1/3200 Aperture F6.3
Focal length 400mm ISO 500

At time a cold haze came over the lake which gave a very "murky" light. The coots were about 100 yards onto the lake. Photograph cropped about 33%.

3 And in the lead ...........

same descriptors as (2)

Just love fieldfares - something about the way they call and liven up a winters day.

Great pic - shame the bottom bird has the shadow over it, but the picture is so typical of what they get up to - really like it for that.

Cheers Graham,

The fieldfares are a welcome sight in the garden this time of year. Normally they are very flighty, but I think the cold weather is making them more tolerant of my camera waving.

Nice to see the birders out their doing their thing despite the cold northern hemisphere winter. Here's a few from a warmer part of the world:

Nice reflection of the "scruffy" little bird in the water. We have similar here called Dabchicks.

Was that the colour of the water?

G'day Graham

The water was brown where you could see it the lake is covered in duckweed, the green in the picture is the reflection of the trees with the odd spot of blue sky. The bird is a Grebe I think.

Cheers
Steve
