@magicman841 - I think that shot through the station is very cool. Both of the big Canadian railways have had very nice paint schemes through the years, and you've photographed them beautifully. Your second shot is well done, too. I like the B&W but wonder how it looked in color.

@skm.sa100 - I'm guessing this is an excursion line. Did you actually ride it, or only photograph it? Do yo have any shots of the passenger cars?

It's been a while since I posted. Continuing the chronology...

Great train photos from everyone!

The thread is going a bit quiet, so I want to put a photo from Bulgarian State Railways 2011 set I am preparing for uploading to my gallery.

This one is called "Oldness".

During the Wroclaw Dyxum Meet we visited the The Museum of Industry and Railway in Silesia, in Jaworzyna Śląska.
It proved a fascinating place to visit.
An enormous quantity of rolling stock, partly in the open air.
There's is still a great deal of restoration to be done but to me that's also the charm of this place.

I posted a few shots in the DM Wroclaw 2013 thread:

Sorry for the late reply. I just noticed your post today.

This is at a local amusement park in North Carolina called "Tweetsie Railraod". The train is part of the amusements there and it has a 3 mile loop or so (don't remember exactly how long).
It was fun. I'll try to see if I have interesting pics of the cars.

@ MartyMoose - very cool set. I wish that more of the old railroad stations around here had been saved and repurposed. I do have a few shots of one in Springville, NY that is now a pharmacy.

@Johnc - nice shot of a nice loco. There is nice clarity to the air at that elevation, but it does make for very direct light. You managed to capture a good bit of detail in the darkness of the locomotive, which can be quite difficult.

Union Pacific Steam Engine 844 @ Strawberry

UP 844 heads east up Weber Canyon, crossing the trestle over the Weber River at Strawberry on the 9th of November, 2012 at 8:38 a.m.! She’s on her way home to Cheyenne, WY from Sacramento, CA having just departed Ogden’s Union Station at 8:00 a.m.   A few rail fans were up early on this cold November morning to greet her (though most are out of view). A couple weeks earlier she passed here heading west on a warm October afternoon and this same spot was swarming with fans.

@beardedspoon - excellent shot. Great angle and perspective. Is the bridge in the back replaced by the one in front?

@AudioDoc - love to see the steam running. I'm guessing that this was a railfanning event, or maybe I've heard that UP is running steam again??? Maybe B&W film would have been more appropriate given the age of the locomotive, but I suppose you can scan and convert.

Thanks, Peter,

Yes Black and White is always good! So many great photos here. I've had so little time lately for commenting and posting. I love that bridge, you really have great railroad photo ops in your "neck of the woods"! So many different roads!

Yes, as far as I know the Union Pacific is the only North American railroad with mainline steam. Of course they are not in regular service, rather more the pride of the UP and for PR! But 844 is underway most of the year on all of the UPs main lines -- pretty much everywhere that the UP goes, the 844 goes. In this photo, this is the main East West trackage. In fact it is the route of the original transcontinental railroad. Here is a partial schedule:

Very nice set, Allan! That has to be the most unusual steam locomotive! I'm totally unfamiliar with its type and would love to know more about it! Though I know they must be South Africa, from the landscape they could easily just as well have been photographed here in Utah, USA!

Kelly

Thanks Kelly. I must be honest I don't know too much about the loco, but I think it is a SAR Class GL Garratt Locomotive (South African Railways). There are a few of them being used around South Africa for tourist rides.

The train is purely for tourists and runs at this time of year (winter)to a rural area that has a large population of aloe plants and flowers. The total round trip is about 2 1/2 hours. Great fun, nothing like steam

Congrats to Mathieu! His "Moar. Rockies" was selected for the Dyxum Exhibition 319!

Of course you are all champs in my opinion! Keep up the great work everyone and keep those railway photos coming!

I received my copy of Train Magazine "Railroad Maps". I was interested to find "Union Pacific trains per day: 2003". I wish this was more current and I wish they had the same info for other North American Railroads. One of my favorite stretches in the UP mainline between Green River Wyoming and Ogden Utah and that is showing an average of 42 trains daily. Odgen to SLC is showing 31. The busiest stretch is North Platte to Gibbon Jct. Nebraska with 130. Do any of you have stats on your favorite RR hotspots?

Kelly

Lovely scene, maybe the colors are a tad too saturated for my taste. The composition, otoh, is very good with the train seemingly coming from the center of the image.
