Mathieu - love it. The snow covered landscape, the bright orange CP 112 and the heat haze from the engine. Great shot !

On Saturday I visited Llangollen for their Winter Warmer gala, featuring the last weekend of Black 5 44806 at the railway. This loco was bought by the late Kenneth Aldcroft and moved to 'Steamtown' at Carnforth at the end of British Rail main line steam in August 1968. It has not always been in working order, however. After working for a few years, a fault was discovered, and it spent time as a static exhibit, first at Steamport, Southport and when that closed, at the Museum of Science and Industry. In 1993 it was finally moved to Llangollen for repairs, and entered service there in 1995 and has been based there ever since, including another overhaul, completed in 2007. Following the death of Mr Aldcroft, his daughter inherited the locomotive and sold it to a wealthy benefactor of the North York Moors Railway.





Our first ride of the day was on the two coach suburban train, hauled by BR standard tank 80072, seen here at Carrog with the 10:25 to Llangollen. These vehicles were designed for short commuter runs, there is no corridor to maximise seating, each compartment has a door on each side.

This carriage was built by the LNER in 1947, the year before the railways were nationalised. It was one of two for the new ‘Flying Scotsman’ set and has been beautifully restored by the Llangollen Railway and painted in the early post-nationalisation livery of carmine and cream.

"Llangollen Winter Warmer Gala": Alan, I love the entire set! Beautiful work and locomotives. I love the two compositions of the facing engines as well as "3802 at Llangollen". "Great Western freight engine 3802 approaches Berwyn" you've captured a beautiful landscape and steam locomotive in action!

glefebvre, there is a lot of railroad history in this set! Very impressive what the A7r can produce right out of camera! I wish I'd had the opportunity to see that SP cab forward in action as well as the Western Pacific (is it an F7?) which may very well have been seen at work here in Salt Lake City.

I know I'm repeating myself, but you are a very lucky man! Here in Utah, we have the Heber Valley Railroad which owns three steam engines, none of which are currently operational. We've not had steam since 2010. #75 has been in the shops for going on 10 years undergoing a complete rebuild and #618 has finally started boiler re-certification after going cold in 2010. Operating a steam engine is expensive and HVRR, being state owned and operated has, quite apparently, a limited budget!

That museum locomotive photo that Glen posted is a cab-forward 4-8-8-2 Baldwin engine designed for the Southern Pacific RR specifically for the long tunnels of the Donner Pass. More here: SP 4294

This is another great set. I like the B&W treatment of #s 1 and 4 and yes, having the railroad employee in view works. Some of the best RR photos are those with RR people at work. The whole set is beautiful - but I love #2.
