Yes, a lovely shot, AudioDoc. Kuess the A99 and KM lens still take great pics, eh?

It was a beautiful day, indeed!   There usually is a story we can tell about our photos

What a blessing of the reduced weight of the A7 and lenses are for this old guy!
Regards,
Kelly

thanks for sharing that story, so sorry it happened, glad you persevered and got this really "World Class" photo. To me it's right up there w the Best train photos ever taken. Everything is Perfect. If I had taken this photo my life would be complete.
Any Happy stories?
Knowing where that is I still have about 100 questions what it was like being there and even getting there in Feb? I was there in mid Sept. It was excellent, but still close to 100* in the deserts. Not many Americans have been there.

I hear you about the gear. I have 2 camera motto's
"keep it simple, stupid" and "travel lite". Hence I did my trip w my a6000 and 2 lens, which I basically do all my trips, sometimes switching out the lens.

Love that photo, might be to best train photo I ever saw. Congratulations!

Thank you Joseph for your kind words!
Well I guess this, despite the ice and the knee, was a happy story, right? I was there for three days and some of the photos I like the best, were that third day when I twisted my knee! This one, that I posted before was taken shortly before I twisted my knee: Safety First

It took me over four hours to drive from SLC to Ely. It was very windy but I was lucky in that there was no snow fall during my time there. But it was cold when the sun went down (remember the ice?) Had to dress like an Eskimo mornings and evenings, but it was warm when the sun came up. The weekend after I was there they had snow storms, so I was lucky.

With the A6000 and 2 lenses you have an even smaller and lighter kit than my A7 kit! And that is a great camera, really all one would need for Railway photography.

Regards,

Kelly

Cracking shot Kelly; I guess it was worth the knee. Sorry about that though.

Thanks Peter! It was indeed worth it! Of course if I had had the replacement knee that Doc says I need, it probably would not have been an issue! Uh, I think I would rather deal with the occasional pain issue!

Kelly

Thank you, Anthony! Indeed the A99 is a great camera and the KM is a fine zoom, other than the A mount being a DEAD system! Well, at least until Sony proves to us that it is not! I prefer the A99 when I am driving to my destination and don't have to do too much walking or hiking. When we fly somewhere, I always take the A7 kit. I recently purchased a used Sony Zeiss FE 24-70mm f4 which so far I think is a better lens that the KM, though the truth is one can get a good photos from most any lens with the proper camera settings. I usually prefer to use my prime lenses on the A99, but the KM is a very good lens and I got many nice photos using it for this photo op!

Regards,

Kelly

Wow! What a distinctive loco!
Agree with your comments - most lenses can take excellent pictures, despite our infatuation with perfection.
We all secretly believe that if we had a new lens that was just a little better than any we currently have, it would *transform* our photography
Whereas, of course, lens quality is a distant 3rd in importance.
(first being the perseverance to get the right time & place, and second being to understand fully the camera & lens capabilities & limitations).

This is the train that was under my Christmas tree when I was 12 yrs old, and in thought every Christmas since. To me it was the most beautiful train ever, spent many, many happy hours w this Lionel model train, as I'm sure most kids did w theirs.

I grew up on the border of Connecticut and New York and it was possible to see it live, run thru my little town, everyday. Its run was from New Haven into the Grand Central station or Penn station.

I just found this by accident, on flickr and google. Didn't even know there was such stuff. Now I have the New Haven hat, the tee shirt and even a logo ed sweat shirt and couldn't be happier to be back w my old friend, "The New Haven Jet". Thats what it was nicknamed as, there were 10 of them

Thanks for sharing some memories

Great Shot Nilotek! I have no experience with TS lenses and stitching something like that, but it looks excellent to me!

This is the album of my visit to the Nevada State RailRoad Museum, Sept. 10, 2015
The museum consists mostly of 3 engines on display inside. 3 active touring engines outside, in the barn. 2 inside are impeccably restored 1880's era.

The Virginia & Truckee is considered the Queen of the short lines. Connecting the silver mines w the intercontinental rail lines in the Sierra Nevada's California.

The Museum

the Glennbrook

The Inyo

the album has 64 photos so it should be quite complete

this is the album

I visited the Western Pacific RR Museum at the Feather River Canyon, Sierra Nevada's this
last week. It ran the famous "California Zephyr". It's probably the biggest rail museum in the West no one ever heard of. It has many diesel engines, including the Union Pacific - "DDA4Oxs" The Largest and Highest horsepower engine ever built.
