Although they both have 77mm filter thread, the 70-200 lens hood did not fit the original 70-400 - The mount is different. I wish it did since the 70-200 hood is much heavier and fits more securely.

I hope they've changed the hood mount for the better or made it compatible with the 70-200.   Perhaps Gustav can comment on this?

Keeping in the tradition of the Minolta tele-primes, I like it. Now bring on the 400G Mk II!

$2198, so about $200 more.

Congrats, Gustav, to your new lens.

Now, that the lens has been changed to a more acceptable color (personally I would have preferred black or anthrazite, but white is okay as well), I may purchase one as well somewhen.
Unfortunately, they didn't change the "dust magnet" rubber rings at the same time. There are so many complaints about them, I really don't understand why Sony hasn't addressed this problem already. It would be so easy to solve. Just wondering if they never use their own products over there in Japan...

Since I could not find any official statements regarding weather sealing, I think we have to conclude the lens isn't sealed. Or have you heard any official statements indicating otherwise?

Regarding lens protocols, did you had a chance to test the SAL-70400G2 on a SLT-A99 with FW1.00 or earlier?

The SAL-70400G2 is known to be supported by FW1.01 AF-D-wise, therefore it would be particularly interesting to learn if it was already supported by FW1.00 or earlier as well.

Greetings,

Matthias

I think they're trying to tell me something, the expected availability date is my birthday

Sony US has it now listed with full specs and also 70mm and 400mm MTF charts. But they're saying 7/21 for availability.

$2199 is a very fair price for it, I think, given the AF improvements and the unfortunate fact that the prices on lenses on all marques are going up.

Nikon just announced their new 80-400 VR and that's coming in at $2699.

I just saw that Nikon version. Looks like Nikon's gone even crazier than Sony. I was strongly considering Nikon except for their outdated and slow 80-400mm, but with the ridiculous price of this lens, and the chatter about their terrible quality control/customer service, I'm thinking I'll stick it out with Sony a while longer.

I think the improved AF on the new 70-400mm would be nice, but I like my silver version just fine already. I've actually gotten used to the silver color, and find the new white one strangely odd.

Yea... especially when it seems like the grip on.. say: 16-50 f/2.8 is better in that respect. No idea why they didn't use the same rubber opting for the "old one" instead.

I wonder if they got anywhere close to the Sony's image quality.

Hey Matthias, if you watch the camera diner video a few pages back, Paul Genge asks the Sony guy (forget his name) if its weather sealed and after a bit of a "errrrr" pause he says no. I think he uses some term like "splash/rain proof"?

Its semi-official I suppose

Personally I am loving the white finish (over the silver), and eventually I would like a lens in this length. I have been thinking for a long time of looking at a 1.4x or 2x TC for my 70-200 but at 1/4 the cost of the 70-400 it makes me wonder what is the better option - if the focus is fast great. I do wonder though if you need a newer body (A77/A99/Nex6 etc) with the on sensor assistance to get the marketing quoted 4x improvement in speed.

"drip proof" was the term he used I believe.
As for speed - you should ask Gustav, but besides accuracy - I believe your A900 will benefit from improved speed as any other A-mount camera. Simply because focusing motor and controller is located in the lens, so body shouldn't make any huge difference.

There's yet another thing I'd like to know about the SAL-70400G2, this time with a SLT-A99 firmware 1.01.

The automatic correction of lens errors in JPG works well with the SAL-70400G. Does it continue to work with the SAL-70400G2 as well?

Greetings,

Matthias
