I just upgraded to the Sony a9 from my a99 and have some questions about adapting some of my A mount glass to the a9. I have a Sigma Macro 70mm f2.8 EX DG with the screw drive. I also have a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 APO DG HSM lens.
I've been reading and watching Youtube videos and it looks like I would need the Sony LA-EA4 for the screw drive lens and the LA-EA3 for the HSM lens. Then I read somewhere that I had to use a Sigma adapter, the MC-11. On the Sigma site it looks like that adapter is only for their Sports & Arts lens lines.
So I'm wondering if the Sony adapters are my best bet and also what kind of limitations would I see using them (focus tracking, etc).
I also have a couple of older Minolta Maxxum lenses, the 50mm F1.7 and the 70-210 f1.4 beercan lens, both are screwdriver types. Would these work with the Sony adapter?
And one more; can you use the Sigma APO 2X EX DG Teleconverter with the adapters too?
Thanks for any help.

For A mount lenses there is just two alternatives:
- LA-EA3 that allows AF only with lenses with builtin focusing motor, for those lenses
- LA-EA4 offers AF with all AF lenses since it includes SLT mirror and AF sensor - unfortunately that sensor offers just 15 centrally located focusing points

Sigma MC-11 is then for Canon EF (and in other version also for Sigma) mount lenses and obviously is optimized for Sigma lenses.

If I have understood correctly, Sony adapters may work only with those generic teleconverters that hide their presence from the camera. I believe at least some Kenkos belong to category, but I have no experience how the Sigma teleconverters behave, it is possible they imitate Minolta/Sony teleconverters, which are not supported with Sony adapters.

Sigma only sells the MC-11 in EF and SA mount versions.

The LA-EA4 will AF nearly A-mount lenses other than power zooms. It uses an SLT AF array like the A99. The on-sensor phase-detect points are not used.

Only the Minolta and Sony teleconverters aren't supported by the LA-EA adapters.

Hi,
I happily use the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX DG HSM with the Sony LA-EA3 on the A7Riii. With the current A7Riii V3 firmware it works well with Eye-AF and any of the other AF modes that I have tried.
All the best,
Terry

Thanks for the replies. To get this right; The LA-EA3 will allow AF with my Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 APO DG HSM lens and the LA-EA4 will AF with my Sigma Macro 70mm f2.8 EX DG. Do I have this correct? Would the 70mm Macro Sigma work in MF with the LA-EA3?
What about the tracking focus features of the a9 with the Sigma 70-200 and the LA-EA3?

Both lenses will AF with the LA-EA4 while only the HSM lens will AF on the LA-EA3.
Both will have full aperture control and MF on both adapters.
