Review by Mads Peter Iversen of the A7rV:
A7rV Review
A Landscape Photographer's very honest review of the A7rV. No BS!
He upgraded from the A7rIII and gives his reasons why. The Bottom line and truth is that it is still up to hime to make great photos. The camera is not going to do it for him.

I didn't watch all of it but I feel he would've been just as happy with the A7r4 as, for a landscape photographer, the improvements of the A7r5 are not that important. IMHO of course.

Apart from the back screen swivel mechanism: the new one allows you to tilt the screen even if you are taking vertical shots.

Vertical shots are not the mainstay of landscape photography. It is called landscape orientation for a reason

And it is a small thing compared to the price difference. I am still happy with my A7r4 I like the articulating screens of my Canon cameras for vertical street because of the screen, but landscapes? Nope.

Addy,
I think you needed to watch the entire video because he did mention the new features of the A7rV that the A7iv did not have and probably the reason he stayed with the A7rIII for a long time. One was the fully articulating screen. Some others were the focus stacking feature which he said will save hime time rather than doing in manually with his A7rIII. Also the increase in EVF and display resolution and the touch screen for menus. 61 Mp for him was not a reason alone to upgrade so another reason he skipped the A7riv. Also the new menu he feels is not a reason to upgrade though it is an improvement Like me, he didn't really have a problem with the old system because he saves import setting to the favorites menu. I do that too in addition to customizing the FN menu and the memory positions. Basically the reasons he gave would be the same reasons I would would upgrade, except the improved AF and AI focus modes would be other reasons for me to upgrade. Mads as a Landscape photographer is not going to need all the AF features for action, wildlife etc. But he does shoot some video so the the fully articulating screen is important for him.
Regards,
Kelly

Thank you! I was put off by his remarks about other photographers who did try different cameras... Funny that he made these remarks about Thomas Heaton, as Heaton went with Nikon and Nikon has focus stacking for years in their cameras. (As did other brands)

These all are really small improvements over the A7r4. The only significant one imho is the new screen - that was about time! If he has the money to get the latest greatest, good for him!

I never felt the menus to be a problem. I think people were parroting each other - the problem was not the menu system, but the depth of the menu. A new system doesn't make that easier.

Indeed, If you already own the A7rIV, the improvements might not be enough to justify the upgrade. The A7rIV is already a great camera! Mads used the original A7rIII for years. When he switched from Canon to Sony, Canon and Nikon were still only making Full Frame DSLRs. Of course that is different now, but I think the point he made about lenses is important. Not only are there great Sony FE mount lenses available, but there is a huge selection of third party lenses. That is especially not the case with Canon who hasn't opened their mount to third party manufacturers.
For me, even though the A7rV is tempting, the price is holding me back also I am happy with my A7III and A7rIIIa. Like I say, sometimes, good, is good enough! It's great that we have all these choices isn't it?

I don't know if it has already been mentioned in this thread , but anyone buying this camera and the vertical grip should be aware of a slight fault/compatibility issue .
Bottom line is the grip doesn't fit properly.
Essentially the screw on the grip is about 0.2mm too long , so when fully tightened up the grip sits at an odd angle on the camera .
Sony seem to acknowledge this now and you can send your new camera and grip back to them while they mess about replacing bits .

I've got to say I'd be a bit hacked off if I spent that much on a camera and grip and have to send them back to make them fit !

Have a read if this thread for more info ; DPReview thread link

Another member on that forum has measured the depth of the tripod mount screw hole on his A1 and a7v and has determined the a7v is 0.2mm shallower and as that part of the screw is just the rounded end , I think he's just going to grind off the 0.2mm himself and save the hassle of returning them .

I'm not sure how third party grips are effected .
When I got my a7Riv I looked at the price of Sony grips and it made my eyes water !
All my dSLR /SLT grips are OEM , but prices are silly for this one .
So I bought a third party grip from Germany for less than a quarter of the price and it looks , fits and works like an OEM grip .
No idea how the screw lengths compare though.
I wouldn't be happy if I had to file down a £400 grips screw , but no objections to doing it on a £100 grips screw .

Just a bit of FYI

GAS has had the better of me. I sold my A7R iv and my A7R iii (that had been gathering dust) and got the R V. Since 95% of the shots I take are birds; my justification was that I needed something with better bird eye AF and better tracking.

I am looking forward to putting the new toy into action.

Congratulations, Charles!

Looking forward to seeing some bird photos from the Great White North! I hear from a cousin in Winnipeg that you have been having a rather mild winter so far.

This review has some info on shooting birds with the A7rV: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtWVbDEtStA

Kelly

Thanks Kelly.

Yes it is so far (touch wood) the best January that we have had in Winterpeg in my 17 years in this city. I hope it lasts.
