Dyxum Photographs Forums

The Dyxum Photographs Forum is for sharing your photos with other Dyxum members.

Here is how to make use of this area:

Dyxum Contests: these have their own guidelines and are obviously a place where your efforts compete against those of others.

Themed Views: Threads in this forum are for everyone to participate and initiate. If you have shots that fit the theme of a thread, feel free to post them there. If you have a theme in your mind but can't find it in the forum, feel free to start a new themed thread.

Some ideas for themed threads are:
  • Show me your <rural farm scenes>
  • Photos from <Tanzania>
  • Let's see some <portraits>

Open Views: In this forum, if you place photos that you believe are good and want to showcase them, you can start your separate thread containing those photos. We have some suggestions to all Dyxum members who consider starting new threads in Dyxum Views forum:
  • Display the photos you think that are worthy. The decision is up to you but we may interfere if the forum gets clogged up by "space filler" pictures. Try Themed Views and Critique Corner forums for photos that you are less confident with.
  • Try to group your photos (according to their subject, location or anything else that fits) and post them in a single thread. This way, it will be easier to follow the forum.
  • Use an explanatory topic and provide decent information about the photos if you can.

Dyxum Critics Corner: If you would like to get the opinions of Dyxum members about your photography, post pictures in this forum. NOTE: There is a detailed guide to posting shots and critiquing shots in the Critics Corner forum (check the index).
For those writing responses, note that the best critiquing doesn’t have to mean suggesting improvement. It can just be a discussion of intent and techniques.
You should follow the following suggestions while using the Dyxum Critics Corner forum:
  • Note that you should post one picture per thread unless you really think a few pictures can be critiqued at once (this can be true with multiple pictures of the same subject, or photos that have strong relations in different ways)
  • Your thread will be more productive if you include your own thoughts about the picture.
  • When replying, consider if your reply will be any helpful to the starter of the thread. You shouldn’t post simple replies like 'nice one' in this forum.

Dyxum Galleries: This forum will consist of threads chosen by our moderators. It will include the best (or most controversial) photographs by Dyxum users. There will be a smaller number of threads, with long (and hopefully constructive) debates over chosen pictures.

General Notes:
  • All members are welcome to create new threads and contribute to threads created by others (aside from Dyxum Galleries and Dyxum Contests).

  • If you like to post a lot of photos, think of a theme and post them in a single thread. Open a thread on Tuesday with plans to add photos to it every day over the next couple weeks! The basic idea here is to reduce the total number of threads without reducing the total number of pictures, and doing it in a way that makes the forum enjoyable for all members to follow and to participate in.

  • Consider giving pictures you post to Dyxum Open Views a title or name to make it easier for others to refer to them in their replies.

  • When posting comments to these forums, please consider the value of your reply. If an image really strikes you and you just have to say "wow - that's nice" then please do. If you find yourself saying "nice photo" several times a day, you might want to consider cutting down on those replies. While everyone likes to hear good things about their pictures, threads end up getting bumped in the "active forums" view and people click on them to see what's new - only to see that someone said "nice". Some members subscribe to email updates of threads and an excessive number of low content posts won't be appreciated by all.

  • Consider "batching up" your "nice picture" replies and instead of posting it 6 times, posting something more substantial in reply to one picture ... Again, the intent is not to discourage active participation, but to encourage participation in a way that makes these forums better for everyone! Note: to respond to a post use either a reference to the title of a pic, or "@ xxxxxx"

  • Remember the Sample Images subforum in the Lens Talk Area, too, if the reason for posting a picture is to show what you can do with a given lens!

  • Be mindful of members with smaller and lower resolution screens and keep size of images under control. The suggested size is no more than 1024 pixels wide and no more than 900 pixels high.
