Topic: 5000i - Across Canada? Posted: 26 June 2008 at 03:48 |
Well I have a 5000i that I really do not want to sell for $12 on ebay or $25 on Kajiji... I have a 700si that is my film camera so the 5000i is not going to do for that, but then I recalled the XG-1 around the world page here.
Recently I have seen that there is a fair amounts of Canucks on the forum, but most of us are inter spaced by more than a few KM (Miles for those south of the 49th). I am willing to send the body on a journey like the above link within Canada. With a twist.... To tie into the "flagship" talk recently... Take a photo (or bunch of photos) of a scene, with one of your FF compatible lenses and then take the same shot (same lens, same focal length) with your ASP-C camera (5D/7D/a100 to 700). Then post both the ASP-c pix and a scanned print of the FF here. I have a scanner set up so I can take a scan of your print if you do not have a scanner handy. Any fellow Canucks interested? If so we can set out some guidelines... Edited by bill_bly_ca - 26 June 2008 at 05:20 |

I'd be into that. I actually thought about starting something like that with an old 9000 or my 7000i. My idea was for the first guy to send the camera off WITH a roll of film (for surprise) that the next person has to use, then send the camera off with another roll of film and the old film still in it the camera - you actually never get to handle your pics- the next person would get the film developed and post them for the first person and use the roll of film he was sent. and on and on...

That sounds great too.. I have about 20 rolls of the C-41 black and white (bought locally off Kajiji for $10) so I will load up with that and start this weekend..
Now all we need is a few more Canucks to show interest. |

Germany is not exactly Canada ;-) but since you brought up this topic, I'd just like to chime in and share with you, that there's a similar "Minolta camera journey" project running in Minolta-Forum since 2005. We, too, were originally inspired by the YahooGroups project "XG-1 around the world" which took place between 2003 and 2005, however, for our own project, we changed the rules a bit to try and make it not only some group fun happening but also kind of an artistic and/or technical endeavour to many: - The camera is a Minolta XG-9 manual focus body (the European version of the Minolta XG-S), equipped with a beautifully hand-crafted wooden camera grip made by one of our forum members. The so called "coboso" grip was actually another forum project in 2005 and it was planned to manufacture it in small quantities as long as demand lasted, but this project never left prototype status. - Several participans in the project had never used a manual focus body before, and some were quite daunted by the idea, but so far everyone was happy afterwards. Some really loved the large, bright viewfinder with split prism focusing screen. :-) - Every photographer should take exactly 1(!) photo, and not use other lenses (from his own arsenal) than the attached Minolta 50mm standard lens. Nail it down to the point in one single shot - no excuses, no second chance. In particular digital shooters and people used to use zoom lenses were challenged by this somewhat old-fashioned approach. - The camera is equipped with a black & white film (Agfa APX 100 135-36 IIRC). Thinking in black & white is not what most people are used too. - The theme of the photo should be "Heimat" ("home" in its widest sense). - Ideally, the camera would be personally delivered to the next forum member in the row. Such a meeting should be documented by photos as well (with other cameras). However, if this was impossible, dispatch by parcel was allowed as well, of course. - Everyone should write a small article about his motivation of choosing a particular subject. - Once finished, all photos shall be published in a presentation and possibly printed in a catalog (still to be discussed, since the project is still active after more than three years - at present the camera has visited 42 stations across Germany, and we are planning to expand this to Austria and Switzerland (and possibly other neighbour countries as well) soon.) http://www.mi-fo.de/forum/index.php?showtopic=10803 [de] project documentation http://www.mi-fo.de/forum/index.php?showtopic=14115 [de] active project discussion (current thread out of many) http://www.mi-fo.de/forum/index.php?showforum=150 [de] our general purpose project sub-forum The most difficult part, however, seems to be to keep the camera moving, when someone suddenly gets fully occupied by real-world obligations. Several times, the project almost came to an end when members neither found the time to take their picture nor to send the camera off to the next one waiting... It may require quite some administrative effort in order to get things going again in such situations, but fortunately, so far it was possible to always revive the project whenever this happened. So, be prepared of some problems, but I'm sure this will also generate alot of fun! Good luck with the project! :-) Matthias Edited by matthiaspaul - 01 September 2008 at 15:29 |

OK... I think I am set...
Here is the detail, pls comment and we can get started.. Film So my proposal is B& W Kodak 400 C-41 process 24 exp. Why... 1) It is sold at most camera stores. (Blacks,Wallmart, Shoppers drugmart Zellers etc) 2) It can be developed anywhere and typically in one hour. 3) It is (relatively) inexpensive. ($6 for film and typically $6 for developing) Shots 24 You get a 1/2 exposed roll in the camera. Fill the one in the camera, load with a fresh roll , and shoot another 12 Why... So you can see your work (last 12) and the previous shooter (first 12). Get some satisfaction and move it along. As far as I can tell "one" shot is a recurring theme in these exercises and I feel may be part of the "stalling of the camera". Also "it has been done before" so lets go with more shots. Lens No lens will be supplied with the camera. Use your own. FYI I tried the 18-70 kit and the 16-80 Ziess last night and it looks both will give good results (tested by looking through the viewfinder) at 24mm and above.. So even if you do not have FF lens you can participate. Subject You choose in the end but I would like to suggest "Your Town" With this country being so big it is hard for most of to see just normal small town Canada or the less traveled parts of big cites or towns. What you should read into this is "there enough pictures in the world of the CN tower, Parliament buildings, Peggie's cove light house and Stanley park and therefore should be avoided" Try things like the local farmers market. In my case there will be some Oktoberfest stuff (Hey it IS Kitchener) and maybe the Cenotaph and maybe a local park. Time I would propose 2 weeks from time received until time sent to next member. Status Report on this thread that you got it. At the end state what you shot with it and the lens used. Let the next person know it is on the way. Cost Film $6 Develop $6 Ship to next Typ $12 So look at about $24 to $30 to participate. Packing I thought I found a nice box at the dollar store but it was just too small. I will look for a good case to transport it around. While face to face is a great concept I bet I live almost 100km from the closest member who would read this and burn much more fule than the $12 to mail it, but would not discount it out right... I will leave it to you. Battery The current one says full. It should last at least the first 3 or 4 users, if not more. I have one more should someone run out. They are $10 for a new one and I will send a roll of film if someone gets the dead battery then you will not have to buy the next roll. Result pictures Post here if you have a scanner or send to me and I will scan. Optional Take the same shot with your ASP-C camera (at the same actual focal length, not equivelent e.g. take both at 24mm or both at 70mm etc etc.) and we can then later transpose the film shot beside it. Result pictures Post here if you have a scanner or send to me and I will scan. [/QUOTE] Maybe we should have a special Flickr/Smug gallery which all participants can post the photos to. The password and username for posting can be kept with the camera so only participants can post their photos to it. Cal |

This sounds like fun! Sign me up. I'm in Squamish BC (near Vancouver). It might be good to move the camera along east to west (or west to east), or maybe see how many total miles (whoops, kilometres ) we can put on it.
