Thanks all for the interest in the loon shot. I'd spent about an hour chasing them around the lake and if you know loons, they always dive in one spot and pop up somewhere behind you. But, I got lucky and one popped up beside the boat with the sun behind me and camera in my hand.
Just as info, it was spot metered on the head with exposure -0.3 and a sigma flash.

That loon must have been so hard to meter. And focusing on the eye must also be a pain, that chequering must work like a black hole to any AF target system.

@le_rez: Love your shot of the loon. And at 300mm! I have never gotten that close to one!

Got up and close with this Spotted Sandpiper, though. Taken with a700 + Sigma 100-300 f4.
