Lately, I have not been able to use my SLT-A77V camera because of the error message: "Unable to read memory card. Reinsert memory card." Reinserting the card or using another card, spraying a safe electronic cleaner into the SD card slot did not resolve the issue.

Also, doing the following things according to a Sony Forum did not resolve the issue:

   Turn the camera off.

   Remove the battery.

Turn the camera on. (Yes, with the battery removed.)

Hold down the shutter button for 60 seconds.

   Turn the camera off.

   Insert the battery.

   Turn the camera on

I called Sony and was referred to a repair company but eventually was told basically they do not repair this camera because it's too old. The firmware version is 1.07.

Does anyone have any suggestions other than try taking the SD card assembly off the camera and see if there is some physical problem? I see that it is held on by some small screws.

Thanks

I presume you have tested (with eg. card reader) that the problem isn't a faulty SD card?

And welcome to Dyxum!

As I mentioned, using another card (Good) does not resolve the issue. So the issue is with the camera.

1. remove battery
2. loosely fill battery compartment with silica gel packs
3. remove SD card
4. spray electronic contact cleaner in card slot
5. insert SD card and eject SD card repeatedly, do a dozen reps ending with card out
6. wait 15 minutes
7. insert New SD card
8. remove silica gels
9. insert battery
10. turn on check status / repeat if necessary.

Try a MS card (Memory Stick PRO Duo). Do you get a similar error message?

I did spray an electronics contact cleaner in the slot at least three times while inserting and removing a good SD card 12 times and I still get the same error message. (The silica gel packs are not useful as the battery compartment is sealed from the card slot area and they are designed to absorb water and may not absorb contact cleaner.)

I had previously used a contact cleaner but it did not help.

I also tried resetting the camera and that didn't help.

It could be several things including a broken cable or something similar.

You could find an independent repairer that is willing to look inside.
I noticed A-mount cameras are not that cheap in the states. KEH.com has a BGN rated A77m2 for $583,25 - that might be an option.

This is strange. I don't know of any independent repair place. Everything else works on the camera as far as I know.

I would try Precision Camera Repair. I was completely satisfied with them in the past.

A few thoughts and notes:
My Nexxtech Contact and Head Cleaner (isopropanol, isobutane and propane) has served me well getting past the seals on my A99II multi-selector joystick and fly wheels on my various models and brands. Sprayed with an application tube in a quantity to be useful it is liquid, requires agitation (movement) of the contact being cleaned, and dries with evaporation.
The silica gel in the battery compartment serves to make sure the battery is removed and facilitates evaporation. This was the method used to "fix" my Memory Stick slot on my A700.

I called Precision Camera Repair and they would not repair my camera because of its age.

It may be a long shot, but if it's just one of the SD card contacts that's broken getting an MS card might still be working, since these contacts are on the other side. I don't know if these cards are still for sale or if you can find one 2nd hand. I have one I can send you by mail but it might take some time from Belgium to reach you. Send me a PM if you want to explore that option.
