The 2020 film challenge
![]() What is The Dyxum film challenge? If you wonder what this challenge is about then it's simply about revisiting analogue photography for a bit of nostalgia, experiencing a radically different workflow and ultimately, appreciating how convenient our modern equipment makes photography. ![]() Who Any Dyxumer can join this challenge. Just subscribe in the subscription thread - as simple as that ![]() When The idea is to keep shooting film during three upcoming months - starting on 1 September and ending (nominally) on 31 December (These dates are quite flexible, and we can leave the challenge open for the first part of 2021 if people are still posting – this challenge is flexible, because analogue photography is a bit like that…. Equipment You can use any film camera and any lens you like (no matter what brand or format, e.g. medium or big) however we would ask that your first roll uses an alpha-mount (Minota AF) camera (if you have one at present). Like everything about this challenge, we can be flexible here, and reply on individual members to regulate their own adherence to the rules - but remember that we are alpha-mount-dedicated forum in the end ![]() So, as a general rule, if you own an alpha-mount film camera it should be the first one to shoot and post your results. Then you may move on to your other cameras. If you don't have any Dynax, Maxxum or Alpha film camera then well - just use what you have - participation is the important bit. ![]() Results You are expected to deliver 1/3rd keepers from each roll of film and post just those - we realise that sometimes you may have full roll of keepers but you have to narrow your selection down to 4, 8 or 12 shots - depending on the roll (i.e. 12, 24 or 36 frames). As on previous occasions we will keep all challenge in a single thread of discussion, i.e. all photos and discussions about them should be should be posted in this thread. If you have outtakes then possibly post them in this thread. To make the threads a bit less photo-intensive please split your photo-posts into groups of 4 shots - it will be easier to navigate. When posting please state the camera and film used and if possible - also the lens. You may also mention how the photo was digitzed (e.g. what scanner/software). And please remember to "number" your photos in a unique way - this will make it easier to refer to a particular shot in the discussion. |

So, this thread is also for the chit-chat? Lets chat
![]() I have taken 21 pictures with my Minolta Dynax 7 with the Sony 70-400G attached to it. As it has motordrive, taking a picture sounds like "Klung, Grrrrrr" and it is easy to get used to it. Today I took a picture with my Canon EOS R and I was waiting for the "Klung, Grrrrr" that did not come..... It was a weird experience. I am at 21, just 15 to go before I can use my Bronica ![]() |

I took a stroll down by the Thames Barrier earlier and shot off the last of my first roll from the Dynax 7 - I was also shooting with a little Minox 35 and am planning something rather experimental with an old AgiLux folder loaded with 35mm film (I'd been planning to do it with the Microcord, but it didn't seem to like winding 35mm film on, so another old British camera had to substitute). The results should give me a negative about 55mm wide and 35mm high - exposing over the perforations)
Film is currently drying, so hopefully I will be able to scan and post in the next couple of days. |

Wouldn't that be 55mm wide by 24 high? Unless you include the perforations

I'm not sure how much will show over the perforations, but intend to include them in the final results. I have a test roll (shot just pre-September so not valid for the main thread) which I might post up in outtakes if there is anything of note...

Ok so - to start things off:
Camera was my Dynax 7, lenses were Sony 50/1.4AF, Minolta 20/2.8AF and the Sony 70-300G SSM. Film was Ilford HP5 developed in Rodinal and scanned in with a Minolta Scan Dual III. Shots are whole frame, the only exceptions being crops to remove edges of the film and a bit of straightening on some shots. I've picked out what I think are the best 12 - here are the first 4 of those... bob1.1 Frame 3 - Urban fox in my garden ![]() bob1.2 Frame 4 - Selfie (reversed in PP) ![]() bob1.3 Frame 5 - Camera Collage ![]() bob1.4 Frame 18 - Cycle route ![]() Edited by Bob J - 09 September 2020 at 18:10 |

More shots from my first roll (Dynax 7/HP5):
bob1.5 - frame 19 - This is the accessway through the Thames barrier - I'd taken a shot with my AGIFold and thought I would do the same with the Dynax 7... ![]() bob1.6 - frame 23 - The MV Royal Iris - for over 40 years this was the Ferry 'Cross the Mersey... for the last 18 years it has been moored on the South bank of the Thames, just down from the Thames Barrier - and for the last 10 years it has sunk twice each day with the high tide. A sad end. ![]() bob1.7 - frame 24 - a tug going down river through the barrier ![]() bob1.8 - frame 28 - a mudlark on the shore by the Greenwich Yacht club ![]() |

Good stuff Bob, especially the fox in your garden is special! We don't get any further than squirrels over here. I also like 1.6 and 1.7 a lot, so much life (and death) around waterways.
I've only shot 8 frames on the Porta film in the 505 si super but it's nice weather today so I'm going to grab my bicyccle and see if I can get a few more frames on. Question: Both my OM4T and M2 are both little over halfway through a roll of FP4 (all from several weeks ago). Can I submit the photo's that I take from now on with these cameras for the film challenge or should the entire roll be shot after september 1? |

Mind the bandwidth of others, don't link pictures larger then 1024 wide or 960 pix high, see here

Well, I'm all for flexibility. I think if I found an old camera with some shots taken (I recently found an Auto s3 with frames going back to the Paris Dyxum meeting in 2015), I'd probably only include the shots taken recently and do the 1/3 out of however many that was, but a couple of days doesn't affect much. I'm in much the same position with a film in my Rolleiflex (frame 7 of 12) - haven't decided what to do with that, but I've got a ton of film to get through as it is... |

You could share the pictures in the themed Film thread. Film is not restricted to the film challenge

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
>> The good: My first attempt at developing my own 35mm film has worked out okay, without any major problems. In fact no minor problems either. >> The Bad: I'm going to post 8 from the roll to meet the challenge criteria of 1/3 keepers, but in truth they should all be in outtakes as none of the pictures are inspiring. (Note to self: take better photos ![]() >> The Ugly: Having not used my Dynax 7 for some time my adjustments of settings was a bit rusty and I seem to have had the exposure set to centre weighted, so a lot of the highlights are blown out. Hey Ho. Anyways, here are the first four of my first 1/3 of my first roll of 24 exposures (all data from : DS-100 datasaver) 1.1 Willoughby Memorial Trust Gallery - the village museum ![]() Minolta Dynax 7 - Minolta 35-105 f3.5-4.5 - Ilford FP4Plus - ISO125 - 1/200 - f8 - 35mm 1.2 St John's Church ![]() Minolta Dynax 7 - Minolta 35-105 f3.5-4.5 - Ilford FP4Plus - ISO125 - 1/640 - f7.1 - 35mm 1.3 Village torch basket ![]() Minolta Dynax 7 - Minolta 35-105 f3.5-4.5 - Ilford FP4Plus - ISO125 - 1/200 - f5.6 - 35mm 1.4 Village War Memorial ![]() Minolta Dynax 7 - Minolta 35-105 f3.5-4.5 - Ilford FP4Plus - ISO125 - 1/800 - f4 - 50mm Edit: numbering changed to roll #.image# Edited by bonneville - 15 September 2020 at 16:26 |

I think you did a fine job, bonneville - lots of detail in those negs, you can see it in the leading in the windows in the second shot, and in the stone's texture in the fourth shot.
I think I like #4 best, for it's texture and strong B&W tones. |
