I have just sent back an unbranded 3rd party battery grip for my A7RII, it had a number of problems; refusing to come out of sleep mode, error message incompatible battery and battery remaining readout problems.
So I'm looking at the Meike grip has anyone got any experience using this grip?
The Sony grip is too expensive I'm a cheap skate

Hi David. The chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Buy the Sony grip. You should be able to find a used one for reasonable money. I've used Meike grips with other cameras and they usually worked without issues, but each one produced some erratic behavior in the cameras from time to time. Not 100% sure it was the grips, but they were the most likely culprit, forcing me to reseat and restart. Same goes for the batteries you put in it - use Sony batteries only, otherwise you've potentially wasted money on an expensive camera that leaves you staring through an empty viewfinder.

I've always bought Meike grips, only had the actual Sony version twice, I really can't justify the cost difference. I've never ever had any issues. My only gripe about the Meike grip is the on/off toggle... IMO, it's a redundant feature... oftentimes it gets toggle to off by accident (perhaps as I'm putting it in the camera bag or taking it out), and when I go turn it on the camera with the toggle ON the camera, it won't power on because the one on the grip overrides the one on the camera... There's always that couple seconds of panic before I figure out what's happened.

I've used Sony grips for my a900 and a700. But for the a77ii I couldn't really afford them (and nothing seemed to come up for sale on our 2nd hand markets).
So I got a Vello one from BH Photo. It's reliable enough, and works well. I'd still say the Sony ones are better (build-wise etc), but for infrequent use the Vello one is satisfactory.
