@OP:the A550 has the 14mp sensor, that one is not that good, especially in low light. But then, for 50 quid it is plenty good

I do not understand the fascination with the A580 as it is basically a larger A55 with a small optical viewfinder. But I guess people differ...

The A580 is not SLT. As for the small viewfinder, a magnifier soon solves that. The IQ improvement over the A700 (at least my copy) was unbelievable.

I know it is not an SLT, that is why it has an optical viewfinder, and a small one at that. The internals are the same as the A55 and I am not surprised that it is much better then the A700:that 16mp sensor is great - I had a version of it in my Nex 3F and Ricoh GR. A magnifier is a nuisance imho. But like I said: people differ. There is nothing wrong with the A580, but I would most likely prefer an EVF to that OVF.

It has appeal as the last OVF Sony for those who like that, plus (slightly) improved low light capability over SLT models ... even ones that were produced later.

I must admit to a slight sentimentality towards an A580 from what people have said here, would be nice to have the last optical viewfinder model. The fact I have been offered a A550 at such a cheap price is directing my choice to be honest, I can live with slightly poorer IQ because of the use I intend to put it to.

FWIW: The data from the A57 I have is now on Photonstophotos.com. I am surprised it performs so similar but a bit behind the A58 everywhere.

The a550 proved to be a non starter so I have found three choices,

1. A55 12 month Guarantee £123 delivered
2. A58 30 Day Warranty   £105 delivered
3. A550 30 day Warranty   £115 Delivered

My heart says the A550 but my head says the A55 with 12 months guarantee, any opinions?

I assume that's a typo since it still appears as a choice below.

Why, exactly?

but my head says the A55 with 12 months guarantee, any opinions?

That wouldn't sway me much. The majority of my cameras have been bought used with no warranty other than what eBay offers in case they're faulty on delivery.

No, the A550 for £50 that I thought I was buying is the one I refer too, it will not power up.

Why, because the A550 has a optical viewfinder and I very much doubt I will ever buy another camera with one, the world is moving mirror less. However it has a smaller sensor and no fully articulating screen, but it would be nice to have an optical viewfinder one last time.

Well ... choosing among Sony A-mount cameras is always a juggling act of balancing priorities. You'll have to sort it out as you see fit.

A580 arrived today and it is a lovely camera on first impressions, glad I did not go for one of the smaller bodies, I think I would of struggled with my big hands and any smaller body.

One weird thing, the camera works great with every one of my non sony lenses but when I put my only sony lens on an 18-55mm kit lens it sits there hunting for focus and aperture and will not work. Wex have been great and checked for firmware updates but can find nothing. I do not have another Sony lens I can try, but Wex have a store in Bristol I can take it to if required.

Just wondered if anybody has experienced this before?

Sounds like a communication error between the camera and lens, try cleaning the contacts on both and then try again.

Thank you will try that, it could be that because I have never used the Sony Kit lens, it has just been sat around for the last two years, although it works on my A68.
