If your other lenses are screw drive, it may be a fault in-camera, and it may not work with SAM or SSM lenses. Other models have a fuse which can disable these - not user serviceable, unfortunately.

Thank you I have tried cleaning contacts to no avail. All my other lenses are Minolta screw drive so I think I had better take it back to Wex

I had a 18-55II with a focal length encoder that wasn't working correctly that would hunt when the focal length being communicated was far from the actual focal length. The brush for encoder had been knocked out of alignment. It was quite easy to open the rear of the lens and fix.

I am not sure what you mean by aperture. If it doesn't show the aperture then the lens isn't connected electrically. It shouldn't even try to focus then.

Hi Quiet QC, now had time to test both camera and lens, the lens works perfectly on the A68 so I think it has something to do with the camera. When I say the aperture I mean when the camera is switched on the lens hunts a little on focus and the aperature number flashes between F8 and ---. All my other lenses are Minolta this is the only one that does not use screw drive. Back to the shop I think.

It might be a compatibility issue. The lens did come out in 2013 three years after the A580. I have had some issues with the 18-55 II with teleconverters on some bodies.

I do hope it is nothing to serious and it is just this lens I really am not bothered about using it. Really happy with the camera.

I've never noticed any kind of weirdness with my 18-55II on my A55 or A77, which both pre-date the lens.

If there's some specific test someone wants me to try, describe it ... but maybe BearairCactus is talking about version I.

Youtube is allowed here.

Did you clean the contacts of both the camera and the lens?

Yes, you have the II lens that came with the A68. That YouTube video has the original 18-55 SAM, not the II.
