Hi folks. I currently do most of my shooting with a Sony a77ii. I'm contemplating picking up a used a6000 to play around with. Here's my big question:
Frames per second My a77ii was advertised as having 12fps. As it turns out that's a "special mode" and so unless I want to use that mode (which means I don't have full manual control), I am limited to 8fps. I feel like it was a bit of false advertising and it's ALWAYS irked me ever since I found out. The a6000 says 11fps. Is this a TRUE 11fps, as in I can use manual shutter/aperture/ISO and still get 11fps? Or is this another "special mode" thing? Also, if I eventually pick up the LA-EA4 adapter, would I be able to make use of my Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 lens with this camera? (Note that I don't have the money to buy a native 70-200 at the moment...if I really like the a6000 I may very well sell the whole a77ii set up and try to buy a native 70-200, but I just don't have the cash for such things at the moment.) |

The A6000 can shoot at 11 FPS at various apertures. Kinda like the special mode of the A77II, E-mount cameras keep the aperture closed down, but you do get to choose which aperture not just f/3.5 or wide-open. The A6000 phase-detect points work down to f/11. This Sony page lays out the continuous focus limitations of E-mount cameras. I am sure the LA-EA4 will work with that Tamron. Sony limits focus tracking during bursts with the LA-EA adapters to the LO frame rate (2.5 or 3 FPS.) A Metabones IV or newer with EF lenses works better on the A6000 than the Sony LA-EA adapters. So essentially that would make the Tamron useless on the camera for me. That's a good thing to know.
I'm not 100% sure what I'm looking at on that chart to be honest! |

Yeah, there is a lot there. I find the A6000 with native lenses doesn't track focus half as well as a low end SLT at least for the motorsports shooting I do. The LA-EA4 works fine at the LO frame rate. Edited by QuietOC - 26 February 2020 at 18:10 |

I wouldn't bother with the a6000. To get a Higher frame rate than the A77II you'll need to pony up for an A9.

It seems like 11fps trumps 8fps? I mean, the reality is I'm not going to be able to afford the a9, maybe NEVER.
But still...3 more fps may be a big enough deal to consider it. |

Then the 12fps on the a77 and a77ii would be better then the 11, considering the 11 fps for the a6xxx series cameras have the same limitations. Headlines vs fine print. Using the same constraints on the a6xxx series cameras that drops the fps to 8 on the a77ii lowers the fps on the a6xxx's also. Though the a6600 is pretty good. The issue is that on the a77ii, the 12fps is a "special mode" on the dial. You lose a lot of manual control using it and I like to have complete control over my exposure triangle. So in regular shooting, it's 8.
The a6000 is 11fps in the regular shooting modes. There's no stupid "special mode" to shoot at a faster speed. |

O.K. Buy it and see for yourself. PS. The battery life will astound you.

Consider the A6100 or A6300 over the A6000. They have live-view at 8 FPS. The A77II and A6000 only have live-view at the lowest frame rate. The A6100 has the new real-time tracking.

I would love to consider a higher level camera, but I don't have the money for it.
Explain the live view thing. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by that. I'm pretty happy with the way the a77ii handles things. I just know that when it comes time to upgrade in the future, I'm not sure how many a mount options I'll have. So I'm considering trying out a fairly comparable e mount that I can get for relatively little. |

Above the lowest frame rate setting on the A77II and A6000 instead of seeing a live video stream from the sensor during bursts, you get a slide show of the last image taken. I am pretty used to working with the slide show, but it is hard. I've been close to buying an DSLR a few times. Now I have the A7III which also does the 8 FPS live-view. The A99II is the only A-mount SLT that has it. |

Huh I'm still confused. I mean, I do mostly action photography and I've not noticed anything weird or difficult about it. I feel like someone would have to show me what they mean. I've had the a77ii for a few years now (or maybe 4...I can't even remember! lol) and shoot almost entirely in hi-continuous. Nothing ever seems weird or out of place.

Easy way to see if it's Live View or "slide show" would be to turn Settings Effects to OFF, roll on a few stops of exposure compensation and testing the different frame rates. If what you see in the viewfinder all of a sudden is alot brighter during the burst then it's "slide show"
Just tested my A99ii and it's only doing the live view at the Lo setting. Mid, High and High+ are all slideshow. Edit: Quick secondary test and the A99ii can indeed do live view in Lo, Mid and High settings if I turn the display quality down to standard. If the display quality is set to High it will only do Live view in the Low setting. Edited by SnowFella - 27 February 2020 at 03:11 |
