I am contemplating the purchase of an E mount camera, not as a replacement for my A mount gear, but to add to my armoury.
My idea is to get an A6000 with the 16-50mm OSS lens as a pocketable camera for hiking and sight-seeing. I may also use the body to adapt old lenses. The downside is the lack of IBIS, but IBIS equipped E mount is still a step too far in terms of cost and, at least, the 16-50 has OSS. I do wonder if the Nex 6 or Nex 7 would do me just as well? My one must have is a viewfinder. Budget - up to £300. |

The A6000 is most popular Sony camera ever. IBIS can be as much a liability as a benefit. There are plenty of stabilized lenses available.
I just got the optional tilting EVF for my NEX 5T. That works much better for me than the built-in corner EVFs, but it does take up some space. It also means no flash. I prefer using the 18-55 instead of the 16-50, but it is bulkier. |

I have a soft spot for the NEX-7 (I have two), which I would recommend over the 6, but the A6000 has the benefit of more recent tech - the AF will be better and there is wireless/NFC connectivity, which the 7 lacks. If you use flash you might want to consider whether your selection is compatible (the 7 is old-school).

The NEX 7 lacks phase detect AF compared to the A6000 and the newer sensor in the A6000 is better. But a lot of people liked the ergonomics of the NEX 7. I always liked my A6000 and I think it still is a good camera.
Most Sony APS-C lenses have OIS in the lens. The 16-50 is not considered the best lens, the 18-55 might be better. Growing the system: most APS-C lenses are good without being exceptional. I like the ones I have. |

I definitely recommend getting anything but the 16-50. Mine is gathering dust and it is what it does best ;)
I may be a little harsh, and I may have the tendency to pixel peep a bit, but I really didn't like the results. I got a 35/1.8 OSS that is now permanently on this camera. But this combo is beyond the budget :( so maybe 18-55 instead? Or you won't mind the 16-50's performance. Weight and size is perfect. |

I have and like the A6000 which gets used a lot more than my NEX6, better menu (like the A7's I also use) and a better sensor. AF is also a slight improvement.
Only thing I find dearly missing from the A6000 is the spirit level, the NEX6 and later A6xxx models have it, but not the A6000  I've never used a NEX7, so I can't compare it against the NEX6 or A6000 |

The 16-50 is, to me, about size - the idea of a pocket camera that is capable of being more. Alternatives just seem so bulky. I know there is the 16mm pancake, even smaller, but too inflexible and wide for me when it comes to snapshot shooting. The 18-55 is the obvious alternative, I'm just not sure I have big enough pockets. Then again, I do want decent quality ...
I'm not that fussed about the latest AF, or super low ISO performance - I still happily use my A77 a lot, which, I'm guessing is the Nex 7's big brother? I am getting more tempted to save a few quid and go for the Nex 7 - the iiso shoe is a definite plus as far as my kit is concerned. I'm not planning to get a lot of APS glass, perhaps just a 55-210 to add some length, but an LA-EA1 (or 2,3,4) would give me plenty of options (as do the A58, A77, A99ii). E mount glass can wait until I fall under the spell and go FF. |

The price difference between NEX6 and A6000 might be bigger than the quality and technique between the two. The mic-input is,what I miss most on my NEX6 but I also own a NEX7....

I see another lens option exists - the FE 28-60. It seems to be missing from the Dyxum database, but gets good reviews. It's not ideal on APS-C, but 42-90 equivalent isn't so bad, perhaps add a 16mm pancake in case I need width? It would also not be wasted if I go FF in the future.
It also seems to be within budget (if I get a very very cheap Nex 7). |

The menu system on the NEX-7 might be a hurdle coming from the A-Mount, so it might be worth checking out if you can. FWIW, if you get a good example of the PZ 16-50 you’ll appreciate the weight and space saving. Here are my NEX-7s with 16-50 lenses ...

This lens is in our database. You just have to look for "Fixed focal length" (in E mount). I have reported it but there is no reaction so far ... |

The FE 28-60 when retracted is closer in size to the 18-55 than the PZ 16-50, and it lacks optical stabilization. I can post a size comparison later, if anyone is interested.

if you like primes, the 35/1.8 OSS and 50/1.8 OSS are nice lenses IMHO. But it will up the cost. If your willing to forgo OIS, take a look at the Sony 20/2.8, Sigma 19/2.8 and 30/2.8.
I am waiting for Camerasize.com to include the new small full frame lenses, so I can proof that the A7c with FE 50/2.5 is noticeably bigger then the A6x00 with the E 35/1.8 OSS. At last a kind for kind comparison  I would just go with the 16-50. It is not ideal, but it is small and that is what you are after. I would choose a prime myself for small or something better for reach. But if you want zoom and smallness - the 16-50 is the best option. The 18-55 probably has better IQ - but it still is a kitlens: build to a price and with production variation. |
