How much flash will you use with the new camera?

The A6000 sensor is slightly better in most regards compared to the NEX7.
16mp is plenty for most uses.
I have no play memory app installed - YMMV.
I picked up a small (Godox TT350) flash for my APS-C cameras, anything bigger feels huge.

My need of an EVF is partly that LCDs are virtually unusable in many bright light situations but mainly down to my eyesight - I need reading glasses to view an LCD making it a real pain when walking around (glasses in one hand, camera in the other - how do I hold the ice cream?).

I rejected plug-in EVFs because they seem fiddly, less robust and expensive (and there aren't many for sale)- could I safely leave one attached when I put the camera in a jacket pocket?

Looking at my options, the 16-50 seems the only really pocketable zoom option, so I will go for that. I am not averse to primes, I use them all the time on A mount, but not so much when on holiday sight-seeing with my wife - the main target for this purchase. I currently use an A58 with Tamron 16-300 for this purpose, I will miss the 51-300, but not the encumbrance of the larger camera. I may find space in another pocket for a 55-210 (just in case).

The body choice is not so easy. I guess the A6000 is the best option, but I would probably have to go a bit over budget. The Nex 6 seems cheapest and in most ways the nearest to the A6000, but would I miss the extra 8MP? The Nex 7 is 24MP and has the iiso shoe, which I much prefer to the multi-shoe on the others, but no wifi or Play Memories App compatibility.

I hate to chime in on this one but.
It sounds like what you are looking for is an Olympus OM-D EM-5 Mk2 with a PANASONIC LUMIX G 20MM 1.7 lens. The LCD screen folds to the body for protection when in pocket. The EVF is large and bright. General use 16MP Images are quite nice and when you need it the 40MP high resolution mode works quite well.

Nooooo! You can't go off brand!

But if you do, a cheap Panasonic contemporary to the NEX-7 is the GX-1, and the 12-32 manual zoom is very compact.

The OM-D E-M5 II (what is in a name) is bigger then the A6000 especially with the 20/2.8 and the OM-D E-M5 II with the panny 20/1.7 is only slightly smaller then the A6000 with the 35/1.8 OSS. Looking at reviews, it seems the OM-D E-M5 has nothing that makes it a better choice then the A6000 - but YMMV so make sure to read these reviews.

Anyway, I know you're not looking for it, but Harrison Cameras has the Nex 3N for 70 GBP and the 16-50 for 75 GBP. Half your budget. They also have a brand spanking new A6000 with 16-50 for 469 GBP.

I see no picture Howard - presumably because it is of a heathen brand? Does the GX1 have an EVF?

Addy - TBH I don't envisage a lot of flash use, the built-in flash will almost certainly do for most instances and my only multi-shoe flash (HVL-20M) would do for most other. I could also use iiso flashes with an adapter. It's not that I don't have options, just that I don't like the shoe. My A58 tells me every time I switch on that there is an incompatible accessory fitted to its empty shoe - the message goes away and has zero effect on use of the camera, flashes work fine, but it irritates me. The contacts are too flimsy, too exposed, seemingly designed to cause problems - the first being how to avoid losing the vital protective covers (not supplied with the A58). [rant over]

As for the Playmemories apps - blame Howard, he's got me intrigued. However, they come along with the wifi, which does interest me quite a bit - for remote control shooting, I'd like a lightweight camera for that.

Lee - I would consider other brands, but I am seduced by the ready availability of all those A mount lenses on my shelf, just an adapter away from full AF functionality. Are there any good AF adapters, even for SAM/SSM lenses, on other mounts? And 99% of my shots are handheld - the Olympus 40MP isn't going to help me much.

Phil - It's a link from Google Photos, so apologies if it doesn't work (I can see it!), and yes it has no EVF.

I think with the increasing wifi requirement the NEX-7 may not be the answer for you.

True YMMV. The size difference is a pleasurable EVF experience: the Olympus Model names actually make sense vs. Sony's random numbering. The reason i was going to stay out of this one is i don't like the a6000 period, full stop no caveats.
Sorry Phil, there are no AF adaptors for A-mount to Micro four thirds that i know of But if you're adapting a-mount lenses on the a6000 i have to ask "what's the point?"

Wait, how do Olympus names make sense? To me they are random letters. What does OM-D mean? What does E-M mean? Why two M's? The numbers are fine (1=top; 5=mid; 10=entry level).

With Sony:
A means it is an ILC
4-digits is APS-C
Starting with a 5 is a camera without EVF
Starting with a 6 is a camera with an EVF
0 and 1 = entry
3 and 4 = mid
5 and 6 = top
Easy (a while back somebody said Fuji had a better naming scheme and that scheme is really bonkers imho)

Anyway, I really, really like the A6000. Being left eye dominant I prefer the viewfinder on the side. But I can see how some would like the more clasical user interface of the Olympus or the better EVF - that is why I said: look at the reviews.

Um. so the a3000 is what? besides a piece of crap.
but it makes perfect sense the a6000 came out then the a6100 then the a6200 then the a6300 then the a6400 then the a6500 to where we are at the a6600. is that correct?

I’ll go ...

OM is the SLR heritage as in OM-1, -2, etc.
D is digital (not film)
E is the digital SLR line Olympus had when it was just 4/3 rather than M4/3
M is probably the M4/3 line

Give credit where it's due, the OM stands for Olympus Maitani. Yoshihisa Maitani was chief designer for Olympus.

The 3-series is cheap entry level.

No, it was:
First entry level A6000, then the mid-range A6300 and then the top A6500.
The second generation started with the mid-range A6400, followed by the entry level A6100 and the top level A6600.

It still is a quite a random set of letters. it is named after both the film cameras (OM) and the digital SLR's (E) - so, it says first "SLR Digital" (OM-D) and then "DSLR-Micro" (E-M) - just E-M or just OM-D would have made more sense.... IMHO of course. The DSLR's were just plane E-1, E-300, E-620 - a bit like the Sony scheme.

Some more history: the Olympus OM-1 was originally called the M-1, but Leica was not amused and threatened to sue. So, it became the Olympus M-1 or OM-1.

are you sure? because it sounds like Sony is "calling an audible".
