Thanks again Aavo.
Miranda I hear what you are saying re P&S, but I don't want to buy a P&S that is not going to be used again, like the basic Nikon's/Canon's/Sony's etc. I would rather spend a bit more on something that offers better quality, versatility and stabilization, which we are more likely to use in the future. I am still looking at all options though. Thanks for your input. Edited by ABDurbs - 01 November 2018 at 13:38 |

OK been doing plenty research and consulting with my wife. She prefers the idea of a compact pocket camera, which is not complicated and not expensive. So I am now seriously considering an RX100 which is relatively inexpensive, RX100iii, Olympus TG5 or Olympus Pen e-pl9 with a 14-42mm pancake.
Value for money the RX100 makes a lot of sense, but I love the Pen E-PL9 looks and ICL option for later use. Obviously the Sony has a longer zoom which may be of more use. Any further thoughts? Edited by ABDurbs - 05 December 2018 at 17:31 |

The Olympus 14-42 pancake is like a ff 28-84, and the RX100m3 is like a ff 24-70. So the Sony is actually a little shorter than the Olympus.
I have no experience with the Olympus, but it looks like a good choice if you like their lens selection. Since your are considering the Olympus, have you thought about about the Sony A5100 e-mount? It's little smaller in size, but has a bigger sensor than the Olympus. |

If you select what ever small camera, my opinion is, that EVF is needed when shooting in sunlight, surely in harsh light.

The RX100 is 28-100 equivalent, so a bit longer than the Mkiii and the Olympus and of course quite a bit less expensive. Unfortunately the A5100 is not available in my country, and I have also read that the 16-50 is not a particularly good lens. The A5***, A6*** (my personal choice) are all going to be a lot bigger than the RX100 and the Olympus, once a decent lens is added and my wife will not like that ![]() |

Hi Aavo Yes agree, but it adds to the cost. A camera is still going to be better than her other choice which is a phone camera. Both fail in sunlight, but one produces better images than the other ![]() |

I just realized you are considering both the RX100 (28-100mm) and the RX100m3 (24-70mm). I had the RX100, but I sold it because I wanted something that started at 24mm instead of 28mm so I got the RX100m3.

I decided to buy an Olympus TG5. My wife wanted something easy to carry, weatherproof, easy to use and not too expensive. Thought the TG5 was the best camera for the job.
Thanks for all your help and comments. I guess simplicity and price won the day. |
