Dear Dyxum,

I've a question about IBIS in the E-mount cameras (FF or the A6500): Do they show a shake gauge/indicator in the viewfinder?

I found it really useful in my A100 back in the day: adjusting my grip and taking the shot when the indicator showed minimal shake I could get some pretty sharp photos with long exposure. It also taught me how to properly hold a camera. I am definitely missing this feature in the α77, even though it has superior IBIS in theory, and I was wondering if Sony brought it back at some point?

thanks!

Sorry, no such luck but with the latest generations the EVF image is stabilized and basically serves the same purpose.

It's too bad they abolished the old shake indicator we had before. I saw it first in my Konica Minolta D7D (2005) and we had it in some of the older Sony DSLR:s as well. I think it helped a lot because when I had it I could contribute to the antishake process by focusing more on my shaking hands and counter act it with the help of the indicator. I don't understand why they took it away.

While the shake indicator is not visible in the viewfinder, there is a warning on the monitor. You need to have the maximum amount of information on display, and it's visible on the second line under the word RAW (if you're shooting RAW) - it's a variant on the indicator for Steady Shot being on or off, and flashes when there's a danger of camera shake. It's there on the NEX-7 as well & so works for cameras that rely on lens stabilisation.

I think a graphic guage would be useful to bring back as an option.

It is interesting to see the live view float around slowly. It is especially visible when using focus magnification on a tripod. It reminds me to disable SteadyShot.
