Yesterday I found out a weird and rather nasty problem with my α77 II: when I enter the viewing mode to review the taken photos, I cannot use any controls and only control that gives any response is exit by pressing the shutter button. So, only thing I can do in the playback mode is to see the last photo taken and even there I get no info displays, just the picture. Ok, frequent chimping is not good for you, but still this is pretty annoying. Tried also with other memory cards and the symptoms are always the same. And what surprises me most is that capturing new frames works as usual, so I doubt this is a hardware-related problem.

So, has anybody else ever encountered anything like this? And if so, is there any hints I how I could return the camera into the normal operation?
I have pondered about resetting the camera settings, but I haven't yet had courage to do that (as then I would have to set my preferred settings again and for that I should probably make notes of the current settings first).

First question would be if the same buttons also work when not in review mode?
If they do that would rule out hardware and instead point towards something iffy with the software that a reset might fix.

Yes, when outside playback mode all buttons and wheels etc. work quite normally. Truly bizarre situation...

As with all electronic devices:
Did you turn it off and on?
Did you take the battery out and left it out for a couple of hours?

Also:
Does using viewfinder or screen make a difference?

I've had a look through with both Sony's and Gary Friedman's manuals and I can't find anything where the controls will be locked out during image playback. I agree with addy to leave the battery out but I'd extend it to 24 hours and then if that doesn't fix it go into the menu and Initialize the camera (factory default).

Just a thought, but it might still be a hardware issue, if there's some button not releasing in this mode that is preventing the micro from going about its normal business. Is the playback button sticking?

Happy news! Extended period (24h or so) without battery seemed to do the trick and now the camera behaves normally.

Good to hear, I'm thinking that leaving the battery out for 24 hours forces it into Demo mode so it doesn't wear down the internal battery. Not sure if that's the same as Initializing it but can recall reading somewhere about doing a 24 hour reset.
