As noted above, the HVL-F20M does not require the adapter. It comes with the multi-interface shoe already.

Unfortunately the HVL-F20M does require an adapter to plug into the a99ii. I just pulled out my HVL-F20M, and it plugs into my a900 directly but not my a99ii. The a99ii did not come with a flash adapter (I think the a99 did) so I will need to order the adapter.

There are 2 versions of this flash. The HVL-F20 AM is the old Minolta designed hot shoe. The newer version, the HVL-F20M (withouth the "A") has the newer hot shoe. I hate the chunky adapters so much that I bought used versions of my favorite older flashes to use with my A77ii.

I had no idea there were two versions of this flash! I had actually done searches for flashes compatible with the a99ii, and this did not come up. I am going to get one of these for my a99ii. Thanks for letting me know.

Before you commit yourself to the 20M flash look into the Godox/Flashpoint R2 system of triggers and flashes.

What specifically should we look for?

Thanks.

What specifically do you want? If you're asking about the F20 flashes, the answer is in a post above: The HVL-F20AM fits the old Minolta designed hot shoe. The newer version, the HVL-F20M (withouth the "A") fits the newer hot shoe.

If there is someone who hates adapters, it's me. Having said that, I use the old HVL20 with adapter on my A7iii. The new version is just the old version with the adapted glued on it.
It works fine with the adapter. I hated it with the big flash one it as it was way too heavy, but with the small 20 it works just fine.

Pretty close but not quite. I didn't like the Sony ADP-MAA Multi interface shoe adaptor with the HVL-20AM. The lock on the adaptor is on the lower part of the unit, tight up next to the shoe. Where as the HVL-20M the lock is about a centimeter up from the shoe.
