I just ordered three new originalSony batteries for my Sony A99 and none took a full charge. All appeared new and sealed in heavy plastic wrapper. I can not complain too much as this is my first defective order from eBay.

...and never, ever, purchase Sony batteries on eBay, you will get something that looks exactly like the real thing, but is not real! lol
There is an old thread on here somewhere that warns of this and I can personally confirm.

When I contacted the seller they immediately offered me a refund when I questioned their authenticity...

Glad things worked out for both of us. I got my money back too with no hassle.

Had all my original Sony batteries taken when I had my gear stolen a couple of years ago - never quite managed to get back to the same level of 'authentic' batteries since. I have a couple of non-branded items which work okay but the Sony battery is clearly a step above in terms of charge holding in use.

This is a very useful thread and seems to indicate that 'true' Sony items are still the ones to go for - if you can be certain that you are getting a 'true' Sony item of course!

Best regards, Neil.

I'm considering trying Duracell, a respected brand and much cheaper. Does anyone have experience with them?

One of my KM 7D batteries is a Duracell, can't remember having any problems with it.

When my Konica Minolta NP-400 Batteries gave up the ghost for my KM 7D I picked up a pair from a brand called "UpStart". It's now been a couple of years with no issues with charging, holding a charge or in camera use; I don't know if they make a Sony NP-FM500H variant but if they do I might consider it. The "Duracell" I tried for my a77 gave up in a month. about the same as the "Polaroid" and "Vivitar". I still have, and use a few China "ULTRA HI CAPACITY" on the box "POWEREXTRA" branding on the back of the battery. They don't hold a charge or last as long as the Sony NP-FM500H but they will still charge and are usable; about the same performance I get out of a couple of counterfeit Sony NP-FM500H batteries I also own.

It may have been discussed and I missed it but what is a clue that an official looking Sony NP-FM500H is a counterfeit (other than not holding a charge)?

Good question. For me it's also buying a "Made in Japan" item from China and labeling on the back of the battery. Plus the lack of a serial or production number is also a clue. It's circled in red on the OEM battery. You need a magnifying glass to read it.

I second it - Only get Sony batteries for a99x. knockoffs are cheaper cause they lie about capacity and then wont last. Been there - done that.

I read reviews on Amazon and buyers complain of phony camera products there too (mem cards and batteries). I have recently decided to buy only from B&H since they cannot take a reputation hit with counterfeit products. They also have a credit card that saves you your state sales tax. Amazon is now collecting sales tax.

I would also buy from other big-boy retailers such as Adorama, Cameta, Samy's and the like.
