With Patona I have a rather good experience - they work well for quite some time. But I recently had two of them (one for the Sony A99ii and one for the Sony A7) that gave up completely. But my rate of failing batteries with Sony is exactly the same: two so far.

I have tried many off-brand batteries and now only purchase Sony. Too many did not hold up long term and would fail after a few dozen shots when dying. My Sony batteries last a long time.
I purchased a used camera that had Vivitar batteries. They seem to be working well so far. |

I ordered a backup Vivitar battery on eBay almost the first day of receiving my new A77. The original Sony and the Vivitar gave up the ghost within a few weeks of each other four years later. I have not seen them on eBay recently.

There are many reasons to only buy genuine Sony batteries for your expensive camera, and only one reason not to - about $25. You have thousands of dollars of equipment - don't waste your great glass on a questionable quality battery.

I've found Wasabi batteries to be pretty good as a substitute for the Sony, with on one occasion, their reliability came out ahead of one of my official Sony. Albeit in most cases Sony is marginally better.
I was bequeathed some 3rd part ones that were even cheaper but aren't in the same league as Sony or Wasabi. So these are the only two brands I stick with. |

I have four or five A99 batteries in a draw, of which I think one is unbranded and rest are original Sony. All held charge well if anyone is interested? I think it needs to be within UK since it’s lithium ion batteries - postal service are a bit sensitive about these things being explosive in groups!

I have used collectplus to post batteries in the past (because royal mail are fussy with batteries). |

One Patona - it loose power quicker than the Sony's. Two other clones (that came with the a77ii) - same problem.
I bought the original sony's when buying the A700 - so some of my sony-batch are +/- 10 years old. I don't think that's bad. But i charge twice a year all my battery's to prevent deep discharging. |

Use 3 original Sony's in my A99ii, first came with my A350, second with the A77 and the third with the A99ii. The first 2 look identical and can't for the life of me detect a difference in capacity between them.
Once got 2 aftermarket ones with a third party grip for the A350 and both of them totally died within 6 months. |

I recently purchased Nitecore USB chargers and got some interesting insights on the status of my batteries:
I use my batteries in a cyclic way, and recharge a replaced battery usually within 48 hrs. On the beginning of a camera day a check that my A350 has at least 25% power, my NEX at least 50%. I always have a charged spare battery with me. This works for me, but I consider having an additional FW50 |

I mainly use Sony batteries, but also have a couple of unmarked ebay cheapos I bought as backup to the one Sony I got with my first camera body 10+ years ago. The cheap ones don't have as high a capacity, but they recharge fine and have plenty of charge for my typical daily usage. I have no system as to their use - I am sure some get used regularly and others sit unused for months. I have never had one fail.
I always carry one spare - which is required too often as I have a tendency to forget to put a fully charged one in when I go out. If I know I am likely to take a lot of pictures I will take more batteries to meet the perceived need and then some. |

I own 6 original Sony batteries that came with my a350, a77, a99 & a99ii, plus 2 purchased from Sony. All are working fine and I can't tell too much difference in how long they hold a charge and how long to charge, but I numbered them and rotate them religiously. I had also purchased 2 "other" branded batteries and both lasted only about a year, never showed 100% charged and neither will take a charge any longer, I wouldn't waste my time!
Cheers, |
