Hi Dyxumers, Does the a99 II has continuous focus with object tracking?

I have seen that I can fix focus point in a object in movement and a7 and a9 is going to be in focus everytime.

Does the a99 II focus like a9?

Thanks in advance.

The short answer. Nothing focuses like an a9. So if focus speed acquisition and stickiness are your priority buy an a9. If you need a good all a rounder with slightly more megapixels go with the 99 ii. Fwiw I never liked sonys object tracking in a mount cameras and most emount cameras until the latest iterations. The realtime tracking of the a6400 and a9 are legitimately outstanding.

I supposed that a9 could be the best af system in these days but I prefer a99 II rather than a7r... or a9 due to several minolta and zeiss prime lenses that I have.
So I would like to know if a99 II has similar af sytem that a7 rII, RIII, etc
Specially for birds and sports.

Thanks.

Hi, I have the a99II and it is a great all around camera. I do wish they would release firmware to give it some of the updated features on the a7rii or iii, but so be it. IT does track subjects well, but I havent tried it with birding. I use it for tracking kids and it works well. The eye af is great, just annoyed you have to press a button to do it vs having it on all the time.

My impression is the A99II has better AF than the older A7RII. You need current Sony A-mount lenses to get the best AF performance.

The big AF update on the A7RII was AF-C Eye AF, but that kind of already existed on the A77II.

From experience: The A99m2 AF is much better then the A7r2. No comparison.
The A6400 is better.

I do not know what you mean by "similar AF system" but the A99m2 is really good with the lenses in your signature.

The A7RII, A99II and A7RIII have the same or very similar sensors including the on-sensor F/8 phase-detect points. On the A99II the on-sensor AF points only work with supported lenses. The on-sensor AF points are arranged perpendicular to the horizontal lines sensors in the dedicated 79-point AF module, so Sony calls the overlapping points hybrid cross points.

Cameras with the same AF sensors can have varying AF performance. The A7RIII has improved AF. Firmware 3.0 for the A7RIII added Real-time Eye AF and Real-time Eye AF for Animals. The A7RIII did not gain the Real-time tracking of the A6400/A9.

I own the A99II since a few month. I never use A7, a99 or A77II but i do own several sony body including A850 and A77. No doubts, the A99II have a very capable af, the best so far from sony that i have in my hand.

I also own a nikon d500 with a 400mm 2.8 afs for birds photography. The D500 is probably faster and tracking better, but a99II not far behind and certainly very capable. I buy it first for landscape and macro but the great result i got with my old beaten Minolta 400mm 4.5 make me rethink how i use my equipment. Now i often take it over the Nikon when i go out for birds and need something lighter(just own 2 lens in nikon but lots of Minolta lenses).

Also, i own some old manual lenses (tamron adptall: 90 macro, 300mm 2.8 and a 80-200mm 2.8)that work really well with the EVF of the A99II.

The big negative - is the future of the A-mount...Please Sony !

A99II hasn't even been out three years now, it'll be another year before we get the IIIrd generation.

The a99ii is a stellar camera, so it should just be enjoyed for what it has to offer, which is a lot.
Maybe it will be the end of the a-mount line? Who knows?
It's not inconceivable that an a99iii might yet see the light of day some time in the nearish future, featuring some of the amazing tech that's just been released in the a7R mark IV???

Hi there,

I had rented A7Rm2 during a week.
This camera had convinced me to buy A99m2.

I am using A99m2 since more than 1 year now and I have used it a bit at the zoo for tracking dolphins and orcas jumping. For me it did the job correctly.
I'll intend to use it at a park next month where there are raptors show I guess it will be great.

I had already used A77m2 for tracking racing cars and except for the buffer clearing lag it's already ok for that. A99m2 if used with lenses supporting OSPDAF is in another league.

Definitely A9 is in another league than A99m2, as long as you give it the right lenses.

I am convinced that mount A does not have to finish.

I'm not convinced by my A99ii object tracking. I've tried it and found it to be a bit of a gimmick, nothing like the youtube videos of A9 object tracking. I don't find it to be useful, practically.

However, I've found AF-C to be very reliable with a quick focussing lens, providing you are happy to use spot or zone AF, with just about any AF point in the frame (if the light/lens is right!)

A99ii Eye AF is quite a good party trick but still not on a par with what I have seen from the A9.
