It is all but useless for me
I tried changing to Ttl since I was using old minolta glass but it gave same results as adi

ADI only works when the flash is mounted on the camera, and is not in the bounce position. If the flash is off camera (e.g. wireless mode is set), or set to bounce, the camera ignores the ADI setting.

Okay, but why does it work on the A65 without adapter? And if it is the camera, can it be solved with the next firmware?

A900 with HVL-F20 as controller has minimal lag with either HVL-43 or HVL-F56 in wireless

What Gary discovered is that the A99 not having the built-in flash suffers from the same symptom

Wondering why A900 does not do the same in the same set-up configuration.

Problems with flash delay were intorduced with the SLT cameras particularly - the A580 has a delay of about half that of the A55, for example, though still rather long. From memory, people were reporting delays of around 0.25-0.3s with an A580, and over 0.5s with an A55.

If this problem still exists in the A99 (and even the A77), then frankly it's pretty poor on a camera of that spec. Sony need to fix it.

Okay, I am a girl, but I don't have a good feeling about the adapter. I have tried my Pixel Soldier trigger with adapter on the A99 and I can not get a as fast shutter speed as with my A65 with Pixel Soldier without adapter.

I hope new firmware will solve this BEFORE I have to shoot my next wedding ....

Are you talking about shutter speeds, or flash delay?

In this case I am talking about shutter speeds ... sorry for the confusion.

Then it's a completely different issue from wireless flash delay.

With both cameras using flash, you should be able to get the maximum flash sync speed that the shutter will allow. The exception is if using HSS flash, when every shutter speed should be available.

Not sure what happens when you are using third party flash triggers.

The a65 is a different camera, with different hardware and firmware.

No-one outside SONY can predict what will or will not be solved with the next firmware or even that there will be any firmware upgrade.

However, a few things come to mind which I can't test...

1) is the same delay there when using a f58 as a wireless controller mounted on the a77/a99?
2) is the delay still there when using a f58 on the camera as a ratio controller for multiple off camera flashes? (I expect the delay is still there...)
3) has anyone reported this to Sony?
4) what happens with electronic front shutter is set to off (setup menu 6 on the a99 or menu 5 on the a77)?

I'd be especially interested in (4). EFCS can cause a few subtle problems on the a77, cured by switching the setting to Off.

Answer to No 4: When i did my tests on A77, ECFS was off ( i always leave it off due the known issues with TTL flash inconsistency) Did not try with ECFS ON

Sorry guys if this has been answered previously but does this delay occur when using wireless triggers as well i.e. pocketwizards?

The pocket wizards are just dumb triggers with Sony so no delay.

Not sure what speed we're talking here but, when using a non-native flash or trigger, I think the sync speed is 1/200th same as when steady shot is on.

I'm in the same boat, I don't need an F60 but the adapter doesn't feel at all secure with the F58 so I won't use it on camera. I prefer it off camera anyway so will stick with the flash cable, bracket or Pixel Kings.

One suggestion would be to try a flash that supports an optical non TTL slave that might be a work around.

Though one would have thought Sony would have picked this problem up in field testing

Not if they don't have photographers who use wireless TTL flash do any field testing. I personally have many questions about just how extensive the pre-release field testing of these cameras is, as Sony does not seem to have that diverse a group of "pro" shooters whom they might rely on for such field testing (at least in the U.S.; I have no idea about in Japan).

Given that the A77 has been out for a year and has this problem, and the A99 also has it, it would seem that either:

1) Sony does not know about the problem;
2) Sony knows about the problem but doesn't care; or
3) Sony knows about the problem but is unable to do anything about it.

None of these options is good. All of the options suggest a lack of concern or interest for how the cameras will get used by a certain group of photographers. It's not unlike the problem with the slide-show effect when shooting in hi-speed continuous mode, which makes it far more difficult to use the SLT cameras for a certain type of photography. These are both issues that can make the camera unusable, or very difficult to use by some people who want to pursue the type of photography for which the SLT design is not well suited.

Are these problems inherent in the SLT design, or just a result of Sony failing to address them and basically telling a group of photographers, we don't really care about your interests in using our cameras the way you used to use our cameras, or want to use them in the future?

Whatever the answer may be, it does not speak well of Sony's design philosophy and choices, or design testing processes.

I have now shot two large events with a rented A99 using the flash shoe adapter and my F58 flash. While I understand the concerns some may have in using the adapter, I can report that I had no problems with it.

The bigger problem was when shifting to my A900 and F56 flash, which was my second camera during last night's shoot (with my 16-35/2.8, while the A99 had the 24-70/2.8 mounted). It demonstrated just how much I've come to rely on the flexibility of head movement that the F58 provides vs. the older designs, making it far easier to use with a white bounce card/modifier when the flash is mounted on the camera (not a bracket).
