    Posted: 09 August 2005 at 16:00
The main purpose of DPC is to share our images in an effort to present ourselves as a photographers. At the same time I hope that we will share our comments and experiences with each other so each of us can benefit and improve our photographic skills.

The rules are quite simple:

- at about two-weekly intervals we will open a new topic and all registered users are invited to participate. Once a topic is closed and replaced with the new one we at Dyxum will select the best images and open a voting period.

- voting remains open as long the next topic remains open. The winning image is the one with the best voting score and it will be moved to a DPC winners dedicated thread.

- images containing nudity, violence or and any kind of provocative subjects are not allowed.

How to submit images

- at this time we don't have sufficient web space to host your images. For that reason, you will need another hosting space for your images and to post them by entering the image URL in the post (with a the help of dedicated button)

- please give your post an image name (which will be used for voting later) such as "Sunset over Pebble Beach"

- we recommend to keep image size around 1024 pixels wide for a horizontal and 900 pixels deep for a vertical.

- we encourage all participants to submit as much data as possible (lens, camera setting, file format, post processing info etc)

- All participants are invited to suggest the next topic of the contest in their submission. To do that simply add your suggested topic on the end of your post.

Shouldn't we change the rules a bit?

1. Like in DPreview, the winner chooses the next topic, and are not allowed to participate (can ofc post pics, but out of voting).
2. That person along with either brettania or kiklop takes out the finalists for woting. (So even brettainia and kiklop can be in the contest too... seems unfair else :)

Just some thoughts, not that important tho as long as we have fun.

Yes, more or less, the rules are changing constantly as DPC grow. Any suggestion would be welcome.

Well, we have invited all participants to enter subject suggestion for the next round in case they win. That's fine.
However, I don't like the idea not to allow to the winner to participate in the next round. At least not at the moment (we still need more entries). Of course, if more users suggest that, this will be the rule :)

Another thing we (cam and I) have agreed about is that once we get some winners they will become "the judges" for selecting final images. We only need to wait a round or two and this will be official.
I'm glad you have suggested this and just wait a bit before it gets official :)

It is there in the rules for the individual contests because the 7D and 5D are what we are all about.
The rules above in this thread are "general" ones, but each contest has a specific set of rules to minimize unnecessary debate.
Do you percive some kind of problem -- if so, please explain it.
I have changed the mention about the frequency, to reflect what we are achieving in practice, so thanks for drawing my attention to this.

Well, the site is dedicated to ALL KM dslr cameras. That's the key point of all contents one may find on dyxum forums included.
Is this a restriction?
Well, yes it is .. but with a purpose dyxum.com is intended to present a small community of KM DSLR users. We aren't the only community based website of this type, and this isn't certainly our invention. There are some trade-offs (as in your case) , but at the same time there are some benefits (community is smaller which allows members to know each other better).
The fact that "contestants pay for their own bandwidth and storage" has nothing to do with this and, while I can understand your points, IMHO it's not fair to make similar statements.
Happy shooting

Here is the question that i have... Do the judges have their monitors calibrated? if they don't, i think they should do so.

If you are reffering to our admin group that is selecting the finalist then the answer is yes, we have our monitors calibrated.

Well, since now the DPC is separate from DPP... maybe heavily processed images should be disallowed in DPC, as otherwise the two are not much different.

Just a thought...

What makes a 'good' photograph is rather subjective - would it be possible, when setting the theme for a DPC, to also indicate the criteria that will be used for judging entries? For example: technical expertise, conformance to theme, artistic creativity, emotional impact of subject matter, visual appeal of image, etc.

I think answers for some of the questions here somehow would be "appropriate"....

Looking at some of the last contests, im just wondering why it is nessesary to have the "good-taste-judges" between the entries and the woting ?

Fx. DPC 50, i could find other good photos to wote for than the socalled finalists, even some of "the others" are better than the finalists....according to my taste. Im sure we all have different tastes, so i find the "good-taste-judges" unnessesary and somehow wrong to be able to give all photos the respect they should have.

Further i dont think the setup/the way photos are presented are the best around. A contest-site i like is www.fujimugs.com, here you have the ability to compare the shots and get the overview......are there any change that we can do something like that ? Take a look at the site, well worth i think.

I have searched the Dyxum website and the Dyxum photo contest site but sill have not found where the subject (topic) of the next photo contest is shown.

I am new to the site, hence please forgive if I overlooked the location of the heading for the current contest topic.

I recently purchased a like new used A700 with two Minolta lens (17-35mm f:2.8 & the "beercan" f:4) and one Tamron 28-75mm f:2.8 lens. This is my first venture into DSLR photography after working with a Sony F828 to produce my "fine" art B&W work. Prior to the digital age, I worked with a 35mm SLR.

Thanks,

RodB
