More compatibility updates:

My second copy of the Minolta AF 75-300mm F4.5-5.6 "Big Beercan" is quite good, and it works properly with all my teleconverters--the reported focal lengths and apertures are corrected, and AF works (slowly) all the way to 600mm f/11. The focus limiter is helpful. Unfortunately it doesn't match the center sharpness of the 55-300 at 600 mm.

The Minolta AF 100-300mm F4.5-5.6 APO D also worked properly with the teleconverters, except it would only AF lock at the wide end of the zoom range on the 2X TCs.

I have a Tamron-F AF Tele-Converter 2x M-AFi MC4
It seems to work ok on my 5-pin Minolta AF lenses, but I haven't really tried to use it much.
My question is: when the converter is not attached to the lens and camera the aperture pin(?) rattles. Is this normal?
Does anyone know where I could find the instructions that came with the converter.

Yes.

The instructions don't say much.

Yes, the aperture pin just carries the mechanical activation through from camera to lens, with a physical offset to tell the camera the effective aperture has been altered by the presence of the TC. If it doesn't rattle or move freely on its own, then is the time to worry!

Most of the older TCs, whether 5-pin or 10-pin, will work on screw-drive lenses but not on SAM/SSM lenses. We've had various threads on compatibility, as it can be a bit hit and miss.

I recently bought a Kenko Teleplus MC7 DGX. I tested it with all my lenses using my A77II. This is the result:

Primes:

Lens                           FL     A      AF
--------------------------------------------------
Sony DT 35mm F1.8 SAM          70     F3.5   Yes
Minolta AF 85mm F1.4           160    F2.8   Yes
Minolta AF 100mm F2.8 Macro    200    F5.6   Yes
Minolta AF 135mm F2.8          270    F5.6   Yes
Minolta AF 500mm F8 Reflex     1000   F16    No

Zooms:

Lens                                  FL(wide) A(wide) AF(wide) FL(tele) A(tele) AF(tele)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tokina AT-X Pro 11-16mm F2.8 DX       22        F5.6    Yes      30       F5.6    Yes
Sony DT 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 Carl Zeiss   30        F7.1    Yes      160      F9.0    Yes
Sony DT 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 SAM          35        F7.1    Yes      110      F11     No
Tamron 18-270mm F3.5-6.3 Di II PZD    35        F7.1    Yes      560      F13     No
Minolta AF 70-210mm F4               150       F8.0    Yes      420      F8.0    Yes
Minolta AF 80-200mm F2.8 HS APO G     160       F5.6    Yes      400      F5.6    Yes
Minolta AF 100-200mm F4.5             200       F9.0    Yes      400      F9.0    Yes

As you can see, the TC nicely adjusts the Focal Length and Aperture values. Autofocus is above expectations: lenses autofocus even if F8 or F9 is indicated.

I have that TC and some of those lenses. Haven't done quite such a well-notated test, but I did notice that the AF ability in the f8-f11 region was strongly dependent on light level and contrast, with more of a gradual failure of AF than a sudden cut-off, and not entirely consistent between different lenses. But thanks for the test results!

I was surprised it worked at all at F8.0 and higher. Reading this topic I expected the camera to just refuse to AF when it detects F8 or more. I consider any AF function beyond F7.1 a bonus.

I got the TC primarily for the 80-200 F2.8 HS APO G and the 135mm F2.8. I also want to see if the TC is any good for macro using the 100m F2.8 Macro.

It would be interesting to see what the image quality is on the 80-200mm F2.8 APO + TC on the tele end (so 400mm F5.6) compared to the 500mm F8 Reflex.

Another thing I want to do (next time when there is a clear sky) is a moonshot using the TC with the 500mm F8 Reflex. On a tripod of course....

I've done that with the Tamron 500mm mirror. And with two 2x TCs!
I posted the result here.

Ahoy!

If anyone is looking for a Sigma 1.4x EX DG APO teleconverter, I have one listed in the Dyxym external sales thread, though would it be an idea for teleconverters to be listed in the Dyxum lens database under a Teleconverters category so just like lenses, owners/users can leave their findings and opinions in the same way?

That's a matched converter that only works with a few Sigma lenses correct?

I would just mention it in the review(s) for whatever lens.

It would be nice if teleconverters and focal reducers got their own separate listings/database. There could also be entries for mount adapters and extension tubes, and, I guess, filters. I don't know why we don't have camera body reviews or flash reviews. There are certainly less of both of those than lenses.

I suppose they have to stop somewhere. I now have a collection of Minolta SR-mount lenses... Sure, they aren't A mount, but they quite nice on E mount Alpha cameras, and they are Minoltas.

I'd love to see camera reviews, and I agree TCs would be worthwhile too.

Indeed - stopping somewhere has to happen.

In the early days there was a flash review database here (I recall contributing to it); but it was soon removed. Something about not enough meaningful input on the wide range of choices available. Also, M. Hohner's site already covered the Minolta/Sony stuff well.

Regarding cameras, IMO very few people have the expertise to write a full-fledged camera review, so I don't think we're missing much there. A 'tips and tricks' type thing could be helpful, I guess, but creating a thread with an appropriate subject line works too.

You could say the same about lenses, but people are entitled to make subjective comments, and these can be very illuminating. When people write things like ... 'This lens is a big heavy beast with terrible CA and flare, but the bokeh is lovely', it tells you something useful about the thing.

So I can't agree with you. I do think we're missing something!
And though M Hohner does have a camera database, that isn't a replacement, and isn't even a very good guide to the basic differences between cameras (most of the data is there but the table is too complex). As a newcomer to Sony cameras and more recently, I want to know things like:

- EVF or OVF?
- live view?
- aperture preview?
- lens corrections?
- battery type?
- card type

I now realise that several of these things can be easily predicted by the camera model number alone, but that wasn't obvious until I made a simple table which shows all of this (and a bit more) and which is dead easy to read and compare.

But user comments are also valuable, in that they illustrate snags or features you might not see in a table.
