At f/8 it could have been made with any lens, I know, but a shot like this needs to be sharp and this Primoplan wide open is a lot but not that. Anyway, glad you like it Fred.

Two new Meyers in the bag
The first is a Trioplan 50/2.9 I bought from a member here. First outing results: 1: Leaf I  2: Leaf II  3: Bridge balustrade  And then the story of the second Meyer that I added. I had to be in Delft today for setting up a group excusion for next year of a club I belong to. I couldn't resist to pay a brief visit to the lens candy store (Paul also knows it well  ) and even though I didn't plan to buy anything I walked out with a Trioplan 100/2.8  . It was grey and dull weather, so very hard to get bubbles, especially for a novice at this like me  4: Entangled bicycles  5: Blasphemy (shot at f5.6  ) 6: When there's no bubbles you can still resort to a normal spirit  7: Far away  All images on an A7ii |

Congrats Pieter! Good start with nice bokehs in # 1 to 4. Beware of the Meyer virus though
I haven't noticed a real relaxation of the 100mm's prices yet. The 50mm's seem a bit lower priced than a while ago. |

I missed my opportunity a decade ago to buy a 100mm Trioplan at a low price. I've watched it rise since then while hoping to see prices back off. I still look once in a while but haven't found the right deal yet. I bought several 2.8/50 Altix versions (attached to cameras) over the past few years before it became common knowledge how easily they could be adapted. Those were $40-$50 at the time and I got enough to supply some friends. I did also adapt a folding camera 3.5/75 Trioplan which performs nicely but lacks the same bubble capabilities. |

I've come to like the Kinon very much. I find the sharpness quite good and the swirl can be managed somewhat by angles and subject distance. I've been enjoying the images and many times, I crop for better composition. Sometimes I'm amazed at how an old projector lens can perform so well.

Some more from my "new" Trioplan 100/2.8 in the woods yesterday
I did some experiments with varying aperture of a similar scene to look at the different moods you can create, all on an A7ii. I specifically was not looking for bubbly bokeh in these experiments. "Tunnel" (@ f5.6)  "Tunnel" (@ f2.8)  "Path" (@ f5.6)  "Path" (@ f2.8)  Wide open the lens creates a dreamy soft focus effect around a reasonable sharp (but rather small) center. @ f5.6 the image is more "normal", certainly at web presentation size, but is you want sharp larger prints the Trioplan is not the lens of choice. On the other hand sharpness can be overrated |

Well Pieter, the uebermodern FE 100/2.8 STF has 13 elements/10 groups, this one has 3 single elements. What to expect other than, for lack of a better word let's call it, character. Unrivaled and unique when used under the right conditions, not so good as a general purpose lens. Edit: I think I prefer the Primoplans over the Trioplans, but Primoplan prices are prime. I like them both, the Trio- and the Primoplan
That fungi shot is very nice Paul! The bridge remains a good subject for these lenses and the bubbles in #$ are great! I guess there will be some Meyers in my bag for the week 50 challenge! |
