Continuing the numbering from Part 6.

This landing is at Cooper Bay in South Georgia, site of a Macaroni penguin colony that we landed to see.

84. A bit of a tricky climb up through the tussock grass. Fortunately it is strong and well rooted, doesn't have cutting blades, and provides something to grab onto when negotiating any hidden pot-holes, or stepping back from an unexpected seal pup.

85. There was a Macaroni penguin rookery on a small patch of level ground on the hillside, and the expedition leaders limited us to short viewings, and 8 of us at a time so as not to spook the nesting birds. Here was the queue.

87. A fine specimen.

88. Strolling down to the beach. Macaroni penguins are about the size of Gentoos, with whom they share this part of the island.

I think so far these pictures have been taken quite far away from the actual South Pole, in fact I think so far there hasn't even been pictures from the actual Antarctic continent, only from the islands near by.

Michael, Domien, Heikki, thanks for the comments.

Heikki, you're correct. So far in the journey, we have travelled from Ushuaia, Argentina, to the Falklands, and then South Georgia.
The Antarctic Peninsula is yet to come.
Next instalment will be a last farewell glimpse from South Georgia as we head across the Scotia Sea to Elephant Island.
As for the South Pole, that was never within reach, nor due to unforeseen circumstances did we actually cross the Antarctic Circle.

More later.

Just found the time to go through the instalments of your journey's documentation. This is obviously a unique experience and to accompany you from that often mentioned armchair position (at home) is really a joy! So thank you, Joe, for letting us share in that experience.

Your images of the animal kingdom of that southernmost part of the hemisphere are very special and stunningly amazing. That you can wander around among penguins, seals and all those other creatures seems to be a genuine privilege, at least as seen from afar. Among those images I have to highlight #35, #46 and - for a culmination of these images sofar - #73 (the wallpaper).

But I have to admit that the scenery and the human history that has been engraved in it is at least similarly fascinating for me - and there is a host of images which exemplify this perspective: #51, #52, #56, #58, #59, #90 - just to mention those which have impressed me most.

Concluding from the map which you initially posted there is more to come - I am looking forward to it!

Thanks Harald and Harm.
It's a pleasure re-living this wonderful experience by going through all my photos, selecting a few representative images, and describing the journey. Both here, and in several narrated 'slide shows' on various family and friends' large TV screens.
Helps to consolidate, make some sense of, and take in the wonder of it all.

Part 8 just posted, and more to come after that.
