I couldn't find a themed thread on this topic, so here are some shots from a visit to Vindolanda, a Roman fort near Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland.

1

Vindolanda site /1

The wall runs along the top of the hill here and this fort predates the construction of the wall; archaeological excavations of the site show it was under Roman occupation from roughly 85 AD to 370 AD

2

Roman temple

Outside the fort and away from the nearby settlement or vicus

3

Vindolanda site /2

4

Vindolanda site /3

5

Farmhouses

Nearby buildings give an indication of the sheltered nature of the site.

---

If there's interest I'd be glad to see other sites posted here.

Nice selection of images from the site.
Starting in April until September they will be continuing excavating the fort.

I can't resist reposting this shot. Purely by chance I took a photo of Howard (before we had met).

At Aboa Vetus Ars Nova museum in Turku, the downstairs is devoted to archealogical findings (and upstairs for modern art + home museum of Rettig family)

I was wondering what we are looking at. According to the museum website:
Aboa Vetus, the only archaeological museum in Finland, is a town quarter discovered underground. The ruin area of Aboa Vetus includes the remains of medieval houses. The Convent Riverfront, one of medieval Turku’s main streets, still runs through the museum area today.

A different kind of archaeology, sea archaeology with the Mary Rose:

I've done deep forensic analysis, Phil, but I can't find you on my photos. Yours is apparently timestamped at 11:01 and my set are from 12:33 to 12:57; even if one of us hasn't reset the camera clock after travelling or the arrival of BST (quite likely in my case), we don't overlap. It's like looking for a figure on the grassy knoll. I have one candidate person who might be using a Sony camera (you had an A900 according to the EXIF), but the figures in your photo are not in mine, that I can see.

Perhaps the guy in the green polo shirt and the khaki shorts?

Boxford Roman Mosaic

(This mosaic was buried by the next day, and I don't know if they have plans to re-expose it. This was three years ago.)
