Let me just say, Don't ever let anyone tell you your job is just like any other photographer!!! I give you guys Massive credit!!! I am mainly a portrait photographer. tonight was my first Concert i have ever shot! I have to say out of all the years I've been playing with a camera tonight was by far the hardest assignment I have ever had! It was especially complicated for me to use such high ISO's I honestly try my hardest to never go above 400, 800 being my limit! I already knew going into this tonight that those rules were out the window. but i seriously had no idea it would be such a project to get great photos , figuring the massive amount of stage lights should be more than enough light to get decent pics. well thanks for reading my little bit*h for the week. But seriously Concert photographers, You guys have a serious talent! Even with the fastest glass It was hard to get great shots! Maybe it's get easier with experience but there is allot of thought that has to put into every shot and absolutely no time to do it.

It's an entirely different approach to photography if you ask me. I enjoy it very much, but I only use 1 out of 10 shots, roughly. 2.8 is the slowest lens allowable, and most shots are with a 50 f/1.7 wide open @ ISO1600.
I could show you hundreds of great shots....... but let's not. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I had a fun time shooting a free concert last summer...aside from the leg cramps after standing for several hours. I was in the third row and shot exclusively with my 70-200G.

When I didn't have a clue. These were all taken about 40 years ago, give or take a year, on Kodak Tri-X with a Minolta XE-7 and 50mm lens, all the equipment I owned at the time. The lens was obviously not nearly long enough and over the years I've printed them all many times, enlarged them again and again and then scanned the negatives and wrestled with those. I was very much a young man of the moment when I took them and enjoying the experience much more than agonizing over the photography. They're grainy, scratched and dusty but I think somehow that is all in keeping with the subjects and the times. And they still sell, especially the Hendrix, a big favorite with young people. I guess dying young is a good career move. And if you don't recognize them, they are Jimi Hendrix, Tina Turner and Ray Charles.

The only time I've had a go at concert photography was at a Police Concert during their reunion tour and a gig of a mates band. Both with a tiny 3.2 Minolta compact Digi. I have to say, it was a bit frustrating :D
There are some very nice shots in here. But I have to get excited at Ace's shots of Polysics. Of all the places i'd think of seeing photos of them Dyxum would be the last place :D I only know one person who even listens to them other than me. I've gone to seen them in concert a couple of times (not recently alas). Still it was a nice surprise and they're good shots. Perhaps you have one showing the singers manic fits? :P |
