Yes, it's a canal but there is plenty of room for boats to pass. There are often boats moored along the towpath, particulary near to road access points. Narrowboats are common users but this particular canal can handle boats double the width. Derelict boats seems to be a bit of a plague recently - I guess the owners just abandon them and the Canal & River Trust (owner of the canal) ends up having to clear them.

B is for Boats - a narrowboat moored outside a barge (twice the width) - the two are used as living accomodation.
