I see now that this is "old news" but I missed it and the A99ii had been available until not too long ago. 😔

Adorama has them listed as a Close Out priced at 3198 USD but Sony US still shows them in stock. So it could be the end of the line, which it probably is, or it's the start of a new one. Either way though I've been crunching the numbers lately about getting the a9 and the 200-600 and still hang on to the a99II.

They are also showing the A77ii as discontinued. Only 17 out of 31 Sony A-mount lenses are in stock. Sadly it looks as if this could really be the end of the line for the A-mount.

Despite this sad (but not unexpected) turn of events, I am at least reassured that when eventually my a-mount cameras go to the great darkroom in the sky, I shall be able to buy an e-mount body and LA-EA-5 adapter and keep enjoying my fine a-mount glass.

Mounts come and go, it is only natural. One day we will write the same about FE.

Where's that interview with the Sony executive professing the continuation of A-Mount? 'round here somewhere...
Any suggestions as to which camera company or mount I should put an end to next. My record is uncanny Olympus OM, Kodak, Minolta, Olympus Four Thirds, Sony A-mount, Olympus (not dead yet but organs are being harvested). Edited by LAbernethy - 19 December 2020 at 23:18 |

Well, Lee, you did not that bad:
The OM system survived the AF onslaught and was around until 2002. Kodak Film still is around and there are several shoot offs from other parts of Kodak. Minolta is still around, Konica Minolta will make a slight loss in 2020, but in the years before it made a profit. Four/thirds, okay, that was in hindsight the wrong choice. A-mount was the first AF-mount, so it makes sense it is the first of the top 5 to be discontinued. Olympus sold the camera part to remain profitable. So, Olympus will be around, but like Konica Minolta not as a camera company. If you want to be in a mount that might become a zombie in a couple of years, in order of likelihood: Nikon F Canon EF Pentax K (yes, I think it will survive beyond F and EF-mount) L-mount (with three camera makers, it might be around for a while) Honourable mentions: Hasselblad H and X-mounts Phase One XF-mount Have your pick and remember it is allowed to share other mount pictures here once in a while ![]() |

The kodak of today is like the nokia of today (yes, also still an active brand, but now with a different niche) ... neither are the original companies though, just all new people who've bought those household names.
At least with Olympus the staff/factories will continue with their new owner rather than start from scratch like new Kodak and new Nokia. I was transitioning from Canon FD > EOS with a few bits of Olympus OM when Olympus decided that their OM future could continue if they were priced like Leica. Understandably the shops/dealers just decided to stop stocking them, pretty much overnight. OM was killed off by that risky decision. Leica continued with manual/film and there might have been room for another 'non-Leica' manual brand (at a better price). I like how bold Pentax have been and that they've stated they will continue with dSLR. 'IF' Canon/Nikon do move away from their dSLR mounts then I can see a Pentax following continuing/growing. They've been niche for a while. The KP (APS) and K1 (FF) look to be fabulous tools (reminding me of the Dynax 7D and Pentax 67). The lens line-up is a real mixed bag though (respected optically, but the lenses seem to have little direction). Hope Pentax re-think their optics, it is a challenge understanding what does what. I'm mid-system and looked hard at Pentax. Ruled out on risk. I'm fascinated by what will happen to Nikon F and Canon EF. As a former Canon EF (film) and Nikon (dSLR) shooter it is amazing to see how small a market share Nikon dropped to. They've both been hurt by Fuji's respectable APS system and by Sony's full-frame. With Nikon coming to mirrorless again after a failed 1-system and Canon making about a dozen APS body models for every lens (over-reliance on people being frankenstein fans and bolting things together while pretty much ignoring any new users). I, personally, find nothing compelling in the Canon/Nikon mirrorless department. m43 will have a rocky couple of years while the Oly camera brand refreshes and Panasonic realize they've been caught asleep on the job (even fuji makes better video gear than Panasonic now!). They've bet big on FF, hope they remember they had/have a m43 division too. Fun times ahead. |
