These are bicycle routes built on the routes of old commuter trains.
I recently cycled three trailways in upstate New York. One by one, they were: - Putnam trailway - North County trailway - South County trailway To make the trip easier, I took the train to Brewster. From there, it's a little downhill to New York. And you have to travel 80 km, which for me is a lot of effort;) #1 The beginning of the trail. ![]() #2 House on the hill. ![]() #3 Middle Branch Reservoir on the Putnam Trailway. ![]() #4 Path through the forest. ![]() #5 Pastures of Stonewell Farm. ![]() #6 Sewage treatment plant by the trail. ![]() #7 Yorktown Heights ![]() #8 New Croton Reservoir ![]() #9 Bridge over the New Croton Reservoir. ![]() #10 Saw Mill River ![]() #11 Woodlands Lake ![]() #12 Ride a bike under a busy road. ![]() All with Sony A6400 and Sony E 18-135. |

Must have been a marvelous day trip - 80 km is no small feat, usually (well, if you have an e-bike...).
I love the saturated greens in the images, particularly #5 and #7 - and #8 for its simple beauty! Great set! Can you explain which of the three mentioned trailways you are showing here? TFS! |

Thanks Harald :)
I was riding an ordinary road bike (not e-bike) I was riding my bike from North to South. Photos 1-4 are taken on Putnam Trailway 5-10 North County Trailway 11-12 South County Trailway I definitely have to go there in the fall. The colors will be much better! |

Marius, I have seen many photos by you of New York, that clearly required lots of walking. Still, 80 kilometers of biking would be my limit as well.
Lovely series of these re-used tracks. The set gives a very diverse view of the route. #5 #9 and #11 stand out for me. I wonder whether it is crowded on the tracks. |

No, the trail was not crowded. It was a Sunday, a beautiful day, and there were only a little more people as I passed a larger town. Such Sunday walkers;)
Now I have discovered two more such routes: Maybrook and Dutchess. They lead from the same Brewster where I started, but you cycle northwest to the village of Poughkeepsie on the Hudson River. From there, return by train. This trip will be a little shorter, around 60km. I will post photos;) |

What a nice way to spend a summer day! Looks like a very nice ride on a sunny day.
I like the pics - for they make me feel what riding a bike would feel like. You did well to do the 80 km plus the pics. 80 km is a bit of effort for me as well - even a gentle downhill. ![]() |

Thanks for the comments :)
The route wasn't downhill all the time :) Garmin says: 372m climb 484m descent This part of New York State is such a hilly area. The camera was attached to the front strap of the backpack with a Peak Design plate. Reaching for the camera is very convenient. |

Looks a lovely ride with plenty of variety. Any coffee and cake opportunities on the way? It's a pity the rail lines closed but good that they were retained for cyclists.

I know about one - Trailside Cafe. But in the beginning, I was so fast-paced that I missed it. Besides, there is none. You would have to leave the trail to the towns.
