That is what everybody calls tbem around here but now you have me thinking it may be a Black-necked Stilt. Both species have red legs and black bills and are widely distributed around the world. I will do some more research and get back to you. Thanks |

The hawk mentioned earlier returned shortly and I was able to take a shot of the head while it was looking into the sun.
![]() A7riii (that allows for larger crops then the A9 and all subjects were stationary more or less) 100400GM + 1.4X The ISO flew up using the 1.4X but I still liked the extra reach. iso1600 F/10 539mm 1/500sec |

Domien, your first time in the wild photos of this bird of prey (Sparrowhawk?) are remarkable. The IQ with the A7riii using the 100400G with 1.4x TC is very fine indeed. Most impressed.

We were fortunate that day (my Birthday so I kinda deserved it
![]() A sparrow hawk landed to take a bath. Again to short to take a decent shot (you can't move because it immediately flies away if you do). But the camera was pointing in the right direction, delivering this shot. The bird was as surprised to see us as we were to see him. ![]() camera and conditions as with the previous shot iso800 230mm F/10 1/250sec |

thanks. We were there to shoot small birds (I'll make a separate post for them). Getting a buzzard, a hawk and a sparrow hawk to shoot was a pleasant surprise. Though they did scare away the small birds. |

I incorrectly called a local bird a Black-winged Stilt whereas it was a Black-necked Stilt. Here is a Black-winged Stilt I photographed in India two years ago. Note there is no blaack on his head. ![]() A77, Minolta 100-400mm, 1/640, F14, 400mm. Another Yellow-crowned Night Heron. Weeks without seeing one and then they seem to be everywhere. ![]() A77, Minolta 300mm NHS, 1/1600, F4, 300mm. Blue-winged Teal shields young from hot sun. ![]() Same as above. 1/2500, F5.6 |

An "outtake" from today's birding walk, 4 hours, 200 shots on the card and they were all of the same bird.
