FYI, common names for the species in Anhinga genus include darter and snakebird. Assuming the above photo was taken in Australia, then the exact species is most likely Australian darter (Anhinga novaehollandiae).

Great series of Anhinga, Darter, Snakebird pictures Peter. I believe Australia and the US share the anhinga's cousin, the cormorant. I will try to post him next.
