We are either lacking in the smaller, colorful birds or I am very bad with finding them. Perhaps the latter. I'll try to post more from my rookery collection. I've never been a birder but do enjoy photographing the big birds, maybe because I spent my first 50 years in an environment that didn't have them. I enjoy my mirror lenses and have more than makes sense. While they can't compete with the high-end lenses many people here have, I find them very challenging and fun to use.
Here's one that has the bird pointing to the telltale evidence of a mirror lens having been used. Rubinar 5.6/500 and A7 II ![]() |

@ VictorV, in the first shot it looks like the hawfinch is playing piano, and I also like the second shot very much
@woodrim, beautiful bird and a beatiful pose, the background bokeh goes very well with the shot, especially the white donuts above the bill. I might only center the bird in the frame for an even stronger composition. @punkskaphil, great shots, especially the second one "in flight", landing gear is up ![]() |

Thanks. It was pure luck: I'd been shooting it perched when it took off but stayed pretty much within the same plane of focus, and just about within the frame. |

Today I had a chance to shoot northern hawk-owk (Surnia ulula) and although I failed to get any proper action shots, I got few decent portraits of this owl...

Reed Warbler. Deep amongst the reeds ![]() And they never keep still. ![]() ![]() But now and again you get lucky when they climb to the top to view their surroundings.. ![]() ![]() |

At least in reeds one will often have pretty good light. In dense trees where many warblers live,it is often difficult to shoot at more than 1/60 second.
Great job Brandy. |

A friend told me that a tree in his neighborhood housed 27 long Eared-Owls.
It turned out to be true and impressive. I took some photos ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I don't know the reason they do this. But it was a yearly party, that ended somewhere in November |

There's a live stream camera in the US that has the camera pointed at some bushes, and for some reason Long Eared Owls line up next to each other in this bush somewhere in Montana. I have seen seven on a branch. Apparently live animal cameras are popular now after the virus lockdowns, go figure LOL https://explore.org/livecams/owl-research-institute/long-eared-owl-cam
