I managed to meet a black woodpecker in a park in Wrocław - nine years ago.
Photo taken with old equipment - Sony A350 with Minolta 100-400 APO.

Amazing find. I walk around a long time. I hear them, but never see one.
Makes me want to shoot one even more

I think the second bird is a mockingbird.

I think you are correct. It is January on the north shore of Lake Ontario, It must be freezing its tail feathers off.
