@Dopol: your owl is a Tengmalm's Owl (aka Boreal Owl). I would imagine a quite scarce species in the Netherlands, if that's where you saw it.
I've seen them on guided birding holidays in Sweden and Finland, but they've always just had their faces poking out of nest holes - I've never seen the rest of their bodies before! |

Boreal owl (Aegolius funereus) ![]() α77 + Sony AF 70-400G @ 400 mm, f/5.6, 1/250 s, ISO 3200 (And yes, that is an old photo) And one fun fact: since boreal owl's name in Finnish is helmipöllö, which translates pearl owl, the Finnish women's national football has adopted nickname Helmarit (from the nickname of boreal owl) sometime after men's national football team got nickname Huuhkajat (eagle owls), which started after incident in Finland-Belgium match on 6.6.2007, when a real eagle owl that had been sort of resident at Helsinki Olympic Stadium made surprise appearence in middle of the game and caused even brief stop of play. |

Thanks, Phil and Heikki
I didn't recall the name of the owl, that I heard when I took the photo. Actually, I took several photos, but I liked the 'little owl shot'. It really is a small bird So, a better picture of the Tengmalm's Owl (aka Boreal Owl) ![]() To make sure I took the proper owl, this was the other little Owl I photographed ![]() The photos were taken in a bird sanctuary in the North of Spain, a long way from Finland. Actually, now that we see the whole bird, it is evident that is not neither little owl nor boreal owl, but Eurasian scops owl (Otus scops). Looking at distribution maps I see that the only place in Spain where you might see boreal owls is Pyrenees.
ObBird: one more small owl species found in Europe is Eurasian pygmy owl (Glaucidium passerinum) ![]() α7R III + Sony FE 5.6-6.3/200-600 G OSS @ 600 mm, f/6.3, 1/800 s, ISO 2000 |

Ah, and now I actually notice that you had two different owls in those last couple pictures and I kinda missed the first picture, which is indeed boreal owl and only the latter is Eurasian scops owl.
ObBird: and for a change something else than an owl: Icterine warbler (Hippolais icterina) ![]() α1 + Sony FE 5.6-6.3/200-600 G OSS + 1.4× TC @ 840 mm, f/9, 1/1600 s, ISO 12800 |
