It took some work in PP, but I am fairly happy with my first decent kingfisher shot today, shot with a manual focus lens

A7IV + Samyang f6.3/300mm mirror lens

Kingfishers are on the wish list of a lot of photographers- so well done.

I assume it was taken from a hide? Probably it was as easy with a manual lens as with AF - unless the camera has a bird-AF setting.

Basically, well done

Thanks Addy, but no, it was not from a hide. In that case I would have had better gear for birding. This is a serious crop from the original. I just noticed the bright blue colour in the bushes during a walk in a quiet area. I was happy it didn't fly away immediately

Fred is now ready with his wish list

But, well done, bit jealous. I have seen this bird only in a fly by, without gear around

Well done Fred for catching one especially with a MF lens too. They normally don't stick around long enough for me to manually focus (or I am just terribly slow with MF )

Now that you have got your first one, it can get addictive very quickly

Great shot Fred. I admire that you are comfortable with MF.

Thanks all! I am sure I will go back for a better shot.
MF is not that comfortable and far from ideal for this purpose

This isn't a equipment thread so don't want to go into it much but my understaing is that the samyang 300mm f6.3 is an APS-C lens. Perhaps a FF alternative might help too. tamron 70-300mm is fairly affordable and light if you are not interested in large lenses.

Thanks Anand!
Indeed the Samyang is APS-
C. Bought it for the mirror features. I have a Sony 70-400 +LA-EA5, but that wasn't in the bag
