I don't know how it is in England, but at least in Finland there is quite strict legislation to protect any nesting site of birds and one would need a special permission to be able to get rid of a bird nest.

ObBird:

European robin (Erithacus rubecula)

I'm not in England at present, the nests are in a marina on Lake Leman (Geneva) where the grebes are anything but shy and retiring. It is remarkable how quickly the build a nest, they seem to appear from one day to the next. As for their destruction, I can only say that I have seen them absent, often along with the boat, a few days after I saw them in use. Perhaps the nest had served it's purpose and the chicks had left before it was destroyed? I have to say that the local grebe population is thriving, there are always loads of them in the marina. There are nests and ncredibly close to human activity, I have seen some sandwiched between a boat and the pontoon it's moored to. I must have a photo - if so I'll post one.

As promised - a nest within a metre or so of human activity. The OOF grey stripe lower left is the edge of a pontoon that boat users walk along. The marina is far from busy, but not unused. Also shows how big a nest can get, they are constantly adding to them.

And an idea of the grebe population, there are at least 14 in this shot up one of the gaps between pontoons.

The population density does lead to some pretty raucous squabbles!

Back with the grebes yesterday - several more nests under construction.

This one has reached a good size, but additions are still coming.

However, it may not be in the wisest of locaitions.
