I'm looking at a book to compliment the 7D owner's manual, and I was looking either at Friedman's 5D/7D book (expensive for color hardcopy), or This One, which is even less $$ than Friedman's e-book. Suggestions or comments?

Stay away from "this" -- it is error ridden. The Friedman book is genuinely worthwhile if you can get by with the e-book.

Thanks for the heads-up on that. I'd prefer to get an actual hardcopy, so an e-book wouldn't work well for me. Any other alternatives, or is Friedman's the best bet even for the hardcopy version?

Magic Lantern Guides may easily be the worst photo book i saw. At least for my tastes.
There isn't any other 5D/7D book AFAIK, so friedman's book seems the best and only choice. You may contact Gary, and arrange to get e-book, see if you like it and then pay only the difference for a hard copy. |

I bought The PIP guide by Chris Weston ... see.
IMHO it is worth the L14.95 for new users of the 7D. Andrew. Edited by brettania - 02 January 2006 at 13:10 |

As a compromise you can buy Gary Friedman's book in black-and-white. I also really wanted a hard copy and got the B&W version. There are only a few places where color is really necessary (e.g. the photos comparing different white balance settings) so you still get 99% of the value from the book for less than half the price of the color version.
Overall I'm pretty pleased with Gary's book. He does start off with a bit much Minolta cheerleading for my tastes (I don't need someone to pat me on the back and tell me I made a good choice), and I also find the book a bit "chatty", but the information in it is very good. I already knew 95% or more of what's in there (from hanging out here and on dpreview and reading the manual) but having all of that information accessible in one place was well worth the purchase price. |

Gary's book is great and goes way beyond what's covered in the manual. You'll get a lot more out of your camera once you've purchased it and you'll forget about the extra $;-).

I have both of these 7D books.
The Magic Lantern was written by a Canadian, unfortunately it is NOT worth reading an expanded rehash of the Minolta manual. He did test write the 7D book six months or so before the final 7D was released which will explain the errors but not the lack of creativity. The Friedman 5D/7D book I purchased the downloaded version for a considerable savings and burned to a CD. I later printed off the whole book and 3-hole punched to a spare binder for easy referral. |
