Hi all,
very much out of my picture-taking area but my brother asked me to take pictures of his selfe-made bows for his homepage - So I made a few test-shots but since this was my first attempt I would very much like to get honest good/bad advice from knowledgeable people. ANY hints/advice would be very welcome :-) Never realy used flash before - so getting the bow lit and the background nice and dark/black was very challenging. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thank you all very much! ![]() |

since nobody has responded yet...
![]() for what it's worth? 1st of all- beautiful! beau-ti-ful bows, a very skilled brother and lovely pics! I think you did well! is his site for selling purposes? in that case, it's crucial, IMHO, to actually focus on the details -when shooting details-? for instance- was trying to read what's written on the bow in #s 3 & 5, but -sligthly- out of focus. (so, for #5, I would only show this beautiful 'grip'? as the out-of-focus 'writing' draws too much attention, thus distracts). of course you need a couple of beauty shots, diagonal positions work like a charm here. and as many (many!) detail shots as required. + close-ups. (if I needed a bow, that's what I'd like to see? as detailed as possible. also to show off your brother's beautiful work! and to highlight his skills). therefore #s 10 & 11 don't really work for me. I'd also like to see the colourful part of the string. if I were you, I'd try to figure out what I'd like to see as a customer, what your brother would like to show and what's most important- detailed pics or arty pics? as this is, presumably, about branding, the 1st does not exclude the latter. love the black BG (not the white-), but other BGs could also add to the pics, as long as they are nice and blurry? does the thing come with arrows? in that case I'd like to see those too? +, perhaps, some bow-in-action shots? (sincerely hope it's NOT! meant for hunting!!!). if you'd use selective focus + nice light, those could really persuade customers to buy? best of luck! ![]() hopefully useful hints / ideas will follow? |

Hi Gerald,
Sorry, missed these which, for a 'lapsed archer' is disappointing to say the least! First, I have to say that I think your brother has done a fine job here and the bow looks really lovely - the colours you show us and the details stand out as being custom made and that should appeal to many users I've met over the years. A few comments - and the main one is please add numbers to the images as it makes people's task a little easier.. ![]() I think you have handled the colours and tone very well though - the change from black to white as a background do not seem to alter the colours dramatically so you have balanced the colours out well, though the shot of the handle area laying horizontally down against the white background could do with a little more contrast 'punch' to bring that lovely texture on the grip out? I also think that a better depth of filed on the shots detailing the specification of the bow - I am assuming this has the length and the draw weight? - would be useful for people to see exactly what specification the bow has been built to. Otherwise, for a first go at this type of thing - and it is not an easy task as you have found out - then it's a fine effort and your brother should be pleased with these. If he is thinking of going 'commercial' in any way then it is a good set for him to use with local clubs etc. and I wish him well. Oh - and perhaps a shot with an arrow already in place and ready to go might have been a nice finishing touch? Take care and I hope the bow shoots as well as it looks! Best regards, Neil. |

The bow is nice.
On the lighting; it's flat. Strip lights or snooted rim lights for highlights would help separation from background and show off the curves. On the background; it's lifeless. The "high key" isn't. It's reading as light grey and doing the natural wood tone no favor. Same for the "black". The first image with the blue in the black is a good start. Something "royal" or "romantic" in the blues or greens would help make the burnt sienna of the bow "pop" Just my 2P |
