The "Banana Bridge" across the King Albert canal in Wijnegem.

A7ii + MD Rokkor 50/2

It's called the "Banana Bridge" because it curves around 90 degrees over the water, on one side the traffic enters parallel to the water and on the other side it lands perpendicular. The bridge will be demolished mid January 2024 (so in a few weeks) and be replaced by two higher bridges, one for cyclists and pedestrians, the other for road traffic. Both will be perpendicular to the water on both sides, so this unique curved design will be a thing of the past. The new bridges will allow higher container traffic on the canal.

Last weekend they took down the southern half of the banana bridge in Wijnegem, this weekend they're working on the northern half

In the background you can see the bridgehead of the new road bridge. On this spot a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge will be built (in 2025 )

I remember the yeast factory (seen earlier) between the new and old bridges.
Oddly, they are building the new bridge only after demolishing the old one.
Be yourself; everyone else is already taken

Indeed, the Mayor of Wijnegem and the building company gave an interview for the local newspaper where they tried to explain why this was needed. But I think they didn't succeed, other than "the logistics of the project required we demolish this bridge now, before completing the new one" no further explanation was given.
