A very nice capture of a Nephila clavata, also known as the Jorō Spider. It is a venomous (potent, but not lethal to humans) member of the golden silk orb-weaver genus. The colors are spectacular as well as distinctive. |

@usaterry: Thanks for the ID. There were lots of these on the Keio University campus where I am lecturing this week. Cheers... Brian

Here is the very first Macro I ever took: ![]() I used a Vivitar MC Macro 55mm f/2.8 (Komine)from the late '70s mounted on a NEX-6. In this case my lens was ~3" away from this big girl. She is a Zoropsis Spinimana. A relatively recent import from Italy that is thriving and spreading in the San Francisco area. |

Now I can look at the beast right in the eye! Keep using that shallow depth of field to your advantage by keeping in focus only what you want to highlight. Nice job.

I just read up on tent spiders and was glad to learn they did not get their name from inhabiting camper's tents. Also non-venemous.

Gray Bird Grasshopper
![]() I see these on the same portion of my redwood fence every year - where the vegetable garden is. Hmmm... (A77 and Minolta 200/2.8 APO HS at f/5.6 with extension tube.) |
