Hey Fred, I believe they are Hummingbird Moths?
But anyway come up around my place. My male cat brings me one at least everyday

I can usually rescue it and put it back outside
He is a mountain cat and has only one thing on his little mind__The Hunt! He does what male cats do, bring home the food
I get small mice and small birds too. Its a riot! but they are dead. I think they die of fright. Never see any blood.
All the Best___Joe

An update; my girl cat brought this one in tonight

It was alive and trying to fly away, got this quick pic of it in my fingers. 5 seconds later I had it flying away outside
One thing, these hummingbird moths have the most aerodynamic wings I've seen. Look designed for high speeds. To me they are beautiful. Hard to comprehend wings like that on a moth, but they go from flower to flower as fast as the hummingbirds
Hence their name I guess. Like I said its a riot in my place 🤷‍♂️

bless you for releasing it, Joseph! (good karma! ).
looks more like an UFO to me? ;)

'this' is a hummingbird hawk-moth -usually rare; very 1st encounter in 2015 at dusk-

UBER-CUTE... and incredibly fast indeed!

speeding...

and 'this' is how it got its name; hummingbird 'butterfly' in dutch

according to wiki's distribution map it hasn't emigrated to the US, yet?
your hummingbird moths or bee-hawk moths seem to have simular bodies and wings?

(notorious box tree moth has a bigger body as well, although different, but moth-like wings and antennae.
like --- aliens ;), -in 2016-). seems you live in a different zoo? ;)

edit! oops, didn't see Ton's post, while searching for pics.

Thanks for the invite Joe !
You are right about the hummingbird moth, but it has all been explained with some nice examples from Digiton and Angora in the meantime
Cat's are hunters aren't they? That's just nature.

Thank you Angora. It's just something I have to do 🙏
Joseph

Those are fabulous captures. The wing movements are spectacular
There aren't many of these critters in downtown San Francisco, so this is all new to me
thank you

3 this ones on the floor

4 these I had never seen before, they were there with the other hummingbird moths and the shape of their wings my 1st thought was they are baby hummingbird moths. I don't know. They were less than 1/2 the size of the others
